Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thanks for the invitation Lovely to follow Ross. I won’t meet his standards Three themes 1. A little but about what it is 2. Why it matters 3. How you can use it Keep up to date. Learning prescriptions Messages and on the job learning.
  • #3 A bit of background. Been doing this for a while with lots of different things to think about and do. Part of that is about being an enthusiast…but
  • #8 Best reason to engage with social media is the same logic as Willie Smith the famous US Bank RObber. When asked why he robbed banks he replied ‘that’s where the money is’ As medical educationalists in the 21st Century we might ask the same question. Why do you engage with social media? Because that’s where the trainees are, and that’s where the information is. If you don’t engage you simply won’t cash in….
  • #29 FOAM flips the classroom. Either through specific media, or through the empowerment of colleagues to find their own learning and bring that to the workplace. Role of the educator is then not to teach from on high, rather it is to help learners organise, sift and appraise their knowledge.
  • #38 Who is your audience

  • #47 St Emlyn’s distribution.
  • #49 Example of tweet showing action within 12 hours of publication on St.Emlyn’s Reducing the knowledge translation gap
  • #50 So what does this mean for us as teachers? In essence it means that we no longer control the flow of information, wither to our learners or to ourselves.
  • #51 Information is out there and we are no longer in control #FOAMed exists in a social age where learners can develop and guide their own learning (and we need to be in the same space) There are simple things we can do at the bedside and in the department enhance our teaching and training. It can make you look good.
