How to use data to
make a hit TV show

The Problem
Use Data analysis to make a hit
TV show by
1. Studying the trend of user
activities while watching a
TV show
2. Their experiences with the
show.
The solution So how shall we proceed
to solve the problem?
Past Insights
Amazon:
Roy Price, the Senior Executive at Amazon
Studios had a job to pick the best TV shows.
He aimed at being on the average of
ratings(7.4 rating).
He made episodes over 8 ideas and
uploaded them as free episodes. While
people watched the episodes, Amazon
watched them and they collected data
points of user activity during the show.
Based on the points, they made a show
about 4 US senators. But it failed to meet
the expectations.
Past Insights
NetFlix:
Ted was the Chief content officer of Netflix.
Even he had a job to pick the best TV shows.
He searched the data they already had.
Based on ratings and trends discovered with
the past data related to the kind of actors,
shows etc that audience wanted, they
decided to make a Drama series about a
senator which was called the House of
Cards which was a great success.
How Data analysis works
Step 1
Identify the problem
Step 2
Use Data Analysis to
break the problem
and understand it in
pieces
Step 3
Join the pieces again
and come to a
conclusion
The optimal solution:
Data Analysis + Intellectual
Decisions
The Solution
● Data analysis can only help to break the problem apart and
understand it in pieces.
● It does not help us in joining the pieces again in order to land up
to a conclusion. This can be done only with brain.
● It's not on data but on us to make right decisions with the help of
data analysis.
● Take Risks as wise risks help you to do extraordinary things.
Relevance To Managers
The ultimate aim of the managers should be to
● Take wise decisions
● Do not depend completely on data analysis to make
decisions to overcome a problem
Relevance To Managers
The ultimate aim of the managers should be to
● Use intellectual skills to club data analysis results with
personal decision making skills to come to a solution
● Take wise risks to accomplish things in an extraordinarily
favourable way
THANKYOU!
