Using HP Storage Manager
In the Enterprise view panel, expand the system tree and click the name or icon of a
controller. The main panel on the right now shows condensed information about the
physical and logical devices connected to the controller. The following figure shows
a typical view of the main panel at this point.
• To expand a physical or logical device list and get brief information about each
listed device, click the triangular arrow icon to the left of a row of devices.
• To get detailed information about any device, right-click the device and select
Properties from the dropdown menu.
NOTE: A drive shaded in light blue is not part of any disk group.
The first three buttons under the Logical devices heading enable you to change how
information is displayed in the Physical devices view.
Table 1: Changing the information format for physical devices
Button Result
Information about physical devices is displayed in text format as
an expanded list. The effect is comparable to clicking the
triangular arrow icon in the initial view.
Information about physical devices is displayed graphically. The
total capacity of each device is represented by a bar, and all
bars are of the same length. Used capacity is shaded. A small
segment on each drive is reserved for the RAID signature; this
area is indicated by a gray cap at the end of each bar.
Similar to the previous format, but the length of a bar in this case
is proportional to the device capacity.
HP Storage Manager User Guide 11
The remaining three buttons under the Logical devices heading enable you to create
and delete logical devices or spare drives.
When you click a physical or logical device in one section, the related components
are highlighted in the other section. For example, when you click a device in the
Logical devices section, the physical drives that make up the logical device are
highlighted in the Physical devices section.
If you click a spare drive, the logical devices protected by that spare are highlighted.
Configuration changes and other important events (such as drive failure) are
automatically reported to the event log at the bottom of the utility window. (You can
also arrange for events on a remote system to be reported to this log. For more
information, refer to “Setting up remote monitoring” on page 12.)
Common tasks
The following sections describe how to perform some common tasks. For more
information about any of these tasks, or to obtain procedures for other tasks, refer to
the online help.
Logging in to remote systems
1. In the Enterprise view panel, right-click the Managed systems name or icon and
select Add managed system from the resulting dropdown menu.
The Add managed system dialog box appears.
12 HP Storage Manager User Guide
2. Enter the requested information into each field. The default value for the system
startup port number, 34571, is already supplied.

process.
Setting up remote monitoring
You can arrange for other systems to receive a message whenever the status of a
monitored system changes. For example, you can arrange to receive messages on
your office system when events occur on a system on another floor of the building.
Some typical events that generate messages are:
• Failure of a hard drive or controller
• Degradation of a logical device
• Change of configuration
• Completion of a rebuild
The notification message can be received as an email or—if the system receiving the
notification is also running HP Storage Manager—as a line item in the HP Storage
Manager event log.
HP Storage Manager User Guide 13
To set up email notifications:
1. In the Enterprise view, right-click the name or icon of the system that you want
to monitor and select Actions>Agent Actions>Configure from the dropdown

1. In the Enterprise view, right-click the name or icon of the system that you want
to monitor and select Actions>Agent Actions>Configure from the dropdown
menu.
The Storage Manager Agent window is displayed.
2. Click the Notifications tab.
3. Right-click the blank region under the Host name column and select Add system
from the dropdown menu.
4. In the resulting dialog box, enter the requested information about the system that
is to receive notifications.
The monitoring system can now receive notifications through the HP Storage
Manager event log.
14 HP Storage Manager User Guide
To view the event log notifications on the recipient system, right-click the name or
icon of the monitored system in the Enterprise view and select Agent actions>View
event log.

  • 10. 10 HP Storage Manager User Guide Using HP Storage Manager In the Enterprise view panel, expand the system tree and click the name or icon of a controller. The main panel on the right now shows condensed information about the physical and logical devices connected to the controller. The following figure shows a typical view of the main panel at this point. • To expand a physical or logical device list and get brief information about each listed device, click the triangular arrow icon to the left of a row of devices. • To get detailed information about any device, right-click the device and select Properties from the dropdown menu. NOTE: A drive shaded in light blue is not part of any disk group. The first three buttons under the Logical devices heading enable you to change how information is displayed in the Physical devices view. Table 1: Changing the information format for physical devices Button Result Information about physical devices is displayed in text format as an expanded list. The effect is comparable to clicking the triangular arrow icon in the initial view. Information about physical devices is displayed graphically. The total capacity of each device is represented by a bar, and all bars are of the same length. Used capacity is shaded. A small segment on each drive is reserved for the RAID signature; this area is indicated by a gray cap at the end of each bar. Similar to the previous format, but the length of a bar in this case is proportional to the device capacity.
  • 11. HP Storage Manager User Guide 11 The remaining three buttons under the Logical devices heading enable you to create and delete logical devices or spare drives. When you click a physical or logical device in one section, the related components are highlighted in the other section. For example, when you click a device in the Logical devices section, the physical drives that make up the logical device are highlighted in the Physical devices section. If you click a spare drive, the logical devices protected by that spare are highlighted. Configuration changes and other important events (such as drive failure) are automatically reported to the event log at the bottom of the utility window. (You can also arrange for events on a remote system to be reported to this log. For more information, refer to “Setting up remote monitoring” on page 12.)
