Avago Technologies unveils a new 2-megapixel CMOS image sensor for camera phones that enables higher quality images and video. The sensor is only 8x8x5mm in size and can record HD videos at 30fps while producing digital camera-like still images. It incorporates Avago's multiplexed enhanced-performance pixels for improved low-light sensitivity. The sensor's on-chip processing eliminates the need for a companion chip, reducing complexity and time to market. Samples are available now with production planned for Q3 2006 at a price of less than $5 per unit for volumes over 1 million.
