The spinal cord is a long, tubular structure composed of nervous tissue, extending from the medulla oblongata to the lumbar region of the vertebral column. It consists of 31 segments and functions to relay messages between the brain and body, transmit sensory information, and coordinate reflexes. The average length of the spinal cord is about 45 cm in men and 43 cm in women.
