Future of ICT in the Sector
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
1. Cloud Computing Migration. Cloud adoptions is becoming
inevitable . Investing in cloud-first technology will mean substantial
benefits for the sector, including reduction in hosting and
equipment costs, increases in capacity, streamlined operations,
enhanced collaboration, and increased productivity.
2. Cybersecurity. Security in the world of the internet of things (IoT)
must be as agile at the components people use. BOTH fluid and
adaptive. Multilayered security measures will rule the day.

3. Intelligent Apps. We have been working with intelligent apps
already. AI in Agriculture, Education. By leveraging on this, we
can focus on advanced analytics, more autonomous business
processes, and more conversational interfaces.
4. Blockchain. A blockchain is a distributed database in which
information—including bitcoins—are listed sequentially in “blocks.”
This helps prevent the tampering of data and promises increased
trust and less business friction by offering transparent access to the
chain. Many blockchain initiatives are still in the early phases i.e.
IBM Blockchain.

5. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. As a sector how are we
leveraging on AR and VR for humanitarian outreach and beneficiaries
satisfaction?
Example:
• The SixthSense augmented reality system lets you project a phone
pad onto your hand and phone a friend -- without removing the
phone from your pocket
• Hololens Teleportation in remote inaccessible areas
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
Blue Ocean or Red Ocean Strategy
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
How are we prepared to transform the sector with high
impact, low cost initiatives and innovations cutting across
different actors
As a strategic partner in the organization, what are we
bringing onboard
Do we analyze the unexploited areas of operations within
the sector
How well do we incorporate business mindset/self
sustainable funding of the organization and reduce over
dependence on donor funding
With this strategy, how will the Sector be
transformed?
 Be able to reduce wastage,
 Eliminate unnecessary competition i.e. Donor
or outreach to the beneficiaries,
 Create new agile integrated “intelligent, digital
& mesh” systems and
 Increase opportunities thereby refocusing the
sectorial thinking and response to
humanitarian needs.
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
What is OUR Game plan?
1. Satisfied Stakeholder
/Shareholders
2. Delighted Customers
4. Motivated & prepared
IT Workforce
3. Efficient & effective
processes
1. Step UP personally and professionally for
collaboration
“Join a technical workgroup”
2. LEAD the transition from IT to DIGITAL
3. DRIVE change in my organization. Move to the
Boardroom from the Server room “ Be a strategic
partner of the organization”
4. Step up as a TEAM to SOLVE sectorial Problems
Expectations on ME/US
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
In Conclusion
NETHOPE AFRICA SUMMIT 2017
1.Embracing best practises
2.Eliminate unnecessary duplication of efforts which
results to huge financial loss
3.Adoption of tried and tested innovations
4.Enhance collaborations and communication amongst
the players in the region
5. STANDARDIZATION

Editor's Notes

  • #4: In response to humanitarian crisis and support, we are intermediary organizations bridging the gap between the “funders”/donors and the beneficiaries. The donors need more or less the same standardized reports and results. How do we work within the humanitarian sector with standardize tools and apps. How are we leveraging on ICT expertise and skills Duplications of Efforts Do we reinvent the wheel/recycle or collaborate. Huge cost of investment in reinvesting the wheel ICT as a Service Provider NGO/INGO Sector working in consortias, how are we prepared to enable the consortia to work in harmony. Do we have an integrated system to be used by the consortium Over dependence on Donor funding Targeting the same public/individual donors who are aging making this kind of funding not sustainable Targeting same corporate donors and governments while operating within the very same sectors
  • #5: We need to re-think our model as a Region and as a Sector as innovation is now making it possible for the “donor” to directly interact with the beneficiary.
  • #6: Being in the 4th Industrial Revolution there is evidence of dramatic changes around us and its happening at exponential speed How are we prepared and positioned???? UNDER CONECTIVITY: In 2015 a Humanitarian Connectivity Charter was launched by the GSMA at Mobile World Congress. The charter is supported by the UN OCHA, the UN Emergency Telecommunications Cluster and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. It was created to help strengthen access to communication and information during crises to reduce loss of life and positively contribute to humanitarian response.
  • #7: How many of our applications now run on cloud i.e. webportals, application systems (office365, Antivirus on cloud i.e. Sophos, kaspersky etc), Cloud data backups etc. Meraki MX Firewall Need to keep our operations and systems AGILE Designers must consider IT security early in the development of applications, solutions, and enterprise architectures. We expect entity behavior analytics will be required across enterprises, and multi-layered security measures will rule the day.
  • #8: Note on AI A good example: VPAs—virtual personal assistants—are another example. They can transform businesses by streamlining workplace processes, such as prioritizing emails and highlighting specific content 1. In near future, we will see the rise of intelligent apps that go beyond assistants. In fact, every software category—from security and beyond—will have artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities
  • #9: A blockchain facilitates secure online transactions. A blockchain is a decentralized and distributed digital ledger that is used to record transactions across many computers so that the record cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks and the collusion of the network. This will be a big deal for a few crucial industries—music distribution, title registry, and identity verification, to name the big ones. IBM Blockchain In simple words, Bitcoin is a crypto-currency proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto which makes electronic payments without any trusted-intermediaries. Blockchaintechnology was used as a backend of Bitcoin for maintaining the distributed transaction ledger in a peer-to-peer fashion which was anonymous and permissionless.
  • #10: AR – Augmented Reality? (Holokit is googles cardboard for AR), Holograms and Hololenses. Pokemon Go a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it. AR applications for smartphones typically include global positioning system (GPS) to pinpoint the user's location and its compass to detect device orientation. Sophisticated AR programs used by the military for training may include machine vision, object recognition and gesture recognition technologies. VIRTUAL REALITY the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.
  • #11: As a sector what strategies are we using when defining our organizational ICT road-maps i.e. Blue ocean or red ocean strategy
  • #13: What makes the customer delighted: Emotions, Value and Efficiency Bottom line we as the ICT Leads are expected to consider the mission, vision and overall strategic road-map of our parent organization and try and map it to the overall Sectorial map and the SDG
  • #14: Embracing best practises i.e. LMMS (WorldVision), VSL & Digital birth Registration (Plan) etc Eliminate unnecessary duplication of efforts which results to huge financial loss Adoption of tried and tested innovations Enhance collaborations and communication amongst the players in the region
  • #15: i.e. LMMS (WorldVision), VSL & Digital birth Registration (Plan) etc Coming up with individual Tech Hubs i.e. Save – Tech Hub, SOS’s DDC , K Point for PATH as leaders FOOD for THOUGHT “HAVE A CENTRALIZED HUB for the REGION”
