I Want To Be Like Sarah

Be Like Sarah
What was Sarah like?
Was she a good mother?
Was she a good wife?
What made her pleasing to God?
II Peter 3:1-13
1 In the same way, wives, be subject to your own
husbands. Then, even if some are disobedient to
the word, they will be won over without a word
by the way you live, 2 when they see your pure
and reverent conduct. 3 Let your beauty not be
external – the braiding of hair and wearing of
gold jewelry or fine clothes – 4 but the inner
person of the heart, the lasting beauty of a gentle
and tranquil spirit, which is precious in God’s
sight.
5 For in the same way the holy women who
hoped in God long ago adorned themselves by
being subject to their husbands, 6 like Sarah
who obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You
become her children when you do what is
good and have no fear in doing so.
How to be like Sarah
1 In the same way,
wives, be subject to your own husbands.
1 Pet. 2:13–14 13 Be subject to every human institution for
the Lord’s sake, whether to a king as supreme 14 or to
governors as those he commissions to punish wrongdoers
and praise those who do good.
1 Peter 2:18–19 (NET) 18 Slaves, be subject to your masters
with all reverence, not only to those who are good and
gentle, but also to those who are perverse. 19 For this finds
God’s favor, if because of conscience toward God someone
endures hardships in suffering unjustly.
Not to men in
general but to
your husband
Why be like Sarah and submit to your
husband?
Then,
even if some are disobedient to the word,
they will be won over without a word by
the way you live,
2 when they see your pure and reverent
conduct.
Sarah’s internal beauty exceeded her
external beauty
3 Let your beauty not be external –
the braiding of hair
and wearing of gold jewelry
or fine clothes –
4 but the inner person of the heart,
the lasting beauty of a gentle and tranquil
spirit,
which is precious in God’s sight.
Valuable, costly, expensive
Sarah submitted to her husband
5 For in the same way
the holy women
who hoped in God long ago
adorned themselves by being subject to
their husbands,
6 like Sarah who obeyed Abraham,
calling him lord.
Sarah submitted:
• When she left Ur with him for Canaan
• When she told Pharaoh and Abimelech
that she was Abraham’s sister.
• When she left Pharaoh and Abimelech
and went back to Abraham.
• When she administrated the household
while her husband was out fighting
battles.
• When she wanted a child through
Hagar.Gen. 18:12 (NASB95) Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I
have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord (Heb. Adon-)
being old also?”
Husbands should have the same
humility.
7 Husbands,
in the same way,
treat your wives with consideration
as the weaker partners
and show them honor
as fellow heirs of the grace of life.
In this way nothing will hinder
your prayers.
1 Peter 2:17 (NET) Honor all people,
love the family of believers, fear
God, honor the king.
Servants, Wives, Husbands -
Christians
8 Finally,
all of you
be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate,
compassionate, and humble.
9 Do not return evil for evil or insult for
insult, but instead bless others because
you were called to inherit a blessing.
To Be Like Sarah
is to be like Christ
Philippians 2:5–11 (NET)
• 5 You should have the same attitude toward one
another that Christ Jesus had, 6 who though he existed
in the form of God did not regard equality with God as
something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself by
taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other
men, and by sharing in human nature. 8 He humbled
himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death –
even death on a cross! 9 As a result God exalted him
and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so
that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow – in
heaven and on earth and under the earth – 11 and
every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the
glory of God the Father.
