„I WILL WALK IN YOUR TRUTH‟
Psalm 86:11: Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth:
unite my heart to fear thy name.
Saying to God, “I will walk in your truth” was the vow that David made
to commit God to teaching him His ways. David was assuring God that if
He teaches him his ways he would in turn walk in His truth. It therefore
seems to me that the truth of God you are allowed to know can be limited
by your commitment to walk in them.
A sign of Christian maturity is when what you want matches with what
God wants; an unreserved commitment to truth is needed in the true
disciples.
A walk describes a life style, a pattern of doing things, a direction and
focus.
From the book of Proverbs we learn that there is the way of the
adulteress (Proverbs 5:1-9). This comes with certain activities and lifestyle,
certain posturing and relationships.
One thing that changes when we meet God, for us to be able to walk in
his truth, is our relationships. We cannot continue to move with the same
gang after encountering Jesus, going to the same places with them, using
the same words, championing the same course, or pursuing the same
schedule. We cannot stand in the way of sinners (Psalm 1:1-2) and walk
with the saviour at the same time. To walk in God‟s truth, we must walk
away from those who have no respect for God or His truth. For us to walk
with Him, He must transform our close relationships. We must walk with
those who will help us in our relationship with God and not those who
stand on our path and block our view of God.
Therefore, Jesus Christ said that those who follow him must have such
KAYODE CROWN

depth of affection for him that the best relationship with their family
members will look like hatred in comparison, and not able to rival it by any
length (Luke 14:26).
He doesn‟t want anything or anybody becoming a stumbling block in
your commitment to him. That was the error of Adam (Genesis 3:1-24).
When there was a conflict between what God wants and the suggestion of
Eve to him, but he chose to follow Eve, who had followed satanic
suggestion. Right from that time God has sometimes demanded that people
act contrary to their prevailing family demand, to be able to walk his truth
and be qualified to be taught his truth (e.g. Gideon [Judges 6:24-40).
When God called Abraham, to set out to start a new lineage, he
demanded that he walk before him and be perfect (Genesis 17:1). But
before then, He had told him to leave his family members behind (Genesis
12:1-4) and walk in the path that He has assigned for him. As suggested by
the psalmist in the focus verse, God would reveal more of his truth to you
if you had been committed to obeying the previous ones he had revealed.
If Abraham never took that step to walk in the path God has wants him
to walk, away from his family, then his life story would have been much
different from what it was. God taught Abraham more of his ways because
he saw that, like the psalmist said: he was committed to walking in God‟s
truth.
In another place God affirmed that he cannot help himself but tell
Abraham stuffs, because, not only has He seen his commitment to truth,
He was sure that he would ensure that his family walk in that truth also
(Genesis 18:16-22). So when God reveals a truth to Abraham, it has a ripple
effect that God wants. God empowers Abraham with truth because he will
do them and empower others also.
At a time, Jesus challenged those who thought he has come to bring
peace on the earth, saying he has not come to bring peace (at least not yet)
but a sword (Matthew 10:32-39), a division in the family structure, a
judgement on the family structure that does not have him as the centre, that
does not glorify him. Jesus said that he has come to pit a man against his
father and a woman against her mother in law; all because one would want
to walk in God‟s truth and the other does not and inevitably there will be a
conflict.
That was what Adam wanted to avoid when he chose to rebel against
God‟s instruction not to eat the forbidden fruit, against walking in God‟s
truth, because of the decision of the wife. He thereafter, disqualified himself
from going further in being taught God‟s way. He was “dis-fellowshipped.”
When you give your life to Christ, and a conflict starts within your
family, because of that with you in the midst of it, you should realise that it
is because you are facing the same conflicting situation that Adam
confronted, where what God wanted was different from what the family
6
I WILL WALK IN YOUR TRUTH

member wanted. The question is: will you still be committed to truth or you
are going to yield to the pressure around you? It is a test that Adam failed.
What about you?
I want to reiterate that walking in God‟s truth demands that you mind
who you associate with. The question that Paul asked is: what accord does
light have with darkness, what agreement do the children of God have with
the children of the devil (2Corinthians 6:14-18)? Paul also added that we
should not be deceived, but realise that wrong association will affect your
behaviour, your walk, negatively (1Corinthians 15:33).
That is why it is recommended that we should love to meet with other
Christians so that we may influence each other positively (Hebrews 10:2425). The church is described as the pillar and ground of truth (1Timothy
3:15), and therefore should form the crux of our close strong association.
If you are somebody who, because of you‟ve been hurt by Christians,
has decided to have nothing to do with Christians, then you need a spiritual
check up. You are suffering from what the bible called root of bitterness
(Hebrews 12:12-15), you have abandoned the law of love and have
embraced the law of self preservation. You have left the law of sacrifice, not
bearing with one another (Ephesians 4:1-7, Colossians 3:12-15), and have
pitched your tent like Lot, in Sodom and Gomorrah, even though you are
called righteous as Lot was (2Peter 2:7). Lot allowed an issue to fester
between him and Abraham and choose to walk away from that relationship
(Genesis 13:5-13).
Commitment to walking in God‟s truth as it affects the choice of our
association, also affects the choice or our ambition. What are your aims in
life? Are they according to God‟s truth, according to the divine code that
has been written in you, according to the divine mandate that you carry?
That is the truth you should walk in.
The truth is what God has determined about you before the foundation
of the earth. Paul said that there are things that have been prepared for you
before the foundation of the earth that you walk in them (Ephesians 2:10),
that is part of walking in God‟s truth.
Paul‟s prayer for the Colossians was that they be imbued with the
knowledge of God‟s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, to be
able to walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, walking, living as God
wants, and thereby pleasing him (Colossians 1:9-10).
Because what displeased God with Adam and Eve was that they went
against what God wanted, therefore we can conclude with all absoluteness
that what pleases God is the fulfilment of His own plans and purposes.
That is why, in what has been called the Lord‟s Prayer, we have a line
there which says: let your will be done on earth as it is heaven (Matthew
6:10).
That is the way of God. It is the truth that we should walk in; it is called
7

the race set before us (Hebrews 12:1). We are meant to carry out what is in
the mind of God. That is why we are told that we need to understand what
the will of God is (Ephesians 5:17), being the truth about what God wants
to do and what he wants to do through us. That leaves out anything like
competition, because the design of our lives, families and ministries
according to the truth of God, in his desire and demand, are different.
Lastly, there is the truth of who you are in Christ Jesus. One main focus
of the epistles of Paul is to ingrain in the believers the truth of their new
reality in Christ.
When Paul wrote that we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in the
heavenly realm (Ephesians 1:3), that is the truth; that we have been
translated from the kingdom of darkness (Colossians 1:13), the dominion of
darkness to light, that is the truth; that we are set apart from the world and
have become a royal priesthood to show forth the praise of God (1Peter
2:9), that is the truth; that we are saved from sin and are now citizens of
heaven through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:18-19), having crossed from
death into life (John 5:24), that is the truth; that there is no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1-2), that is the truth; that
when we pray, God hears and answers our prayer (1John 5:14-15), that is
truth.
These truths empower us to walk with confidence on the face of the
earth, as children of God, having the privileges of royalty.
We need to walk in the consciousness of who we are in Christ Jesus, we
need to realise that God is for us and not against us (Romans 8:28-32), he is
with us and all things are working together for our good. We need to grasp
the fact that we are no longer slaves of sin (Romans 6:6-12) but we have
been made free in Christ.
