  • #6: Story: As highlighted also under topic 1, there is nothing like a satellite only broadcast network anymore. There will always be a terrestrial component. So how to seamlessly use managed services across hybrid networks? Looking at the lowest layer of this chart, you can find the transport layer. This could be a terrestrial or a satellite link. A next level up is satellite session and resource management. Some workflows or services need to be provisioned end to end over the entire network, either in advance or ad hoc, but in the end through a booking mechanism. This is the only way these workflows can be established at a given time without any overbooking risks. This layer entails the booking and reservation of equipment and capacity. A next layer up can be specific software to handle file based transmissions. Different mechanisms can be used here in order to send files over the network in a prioritized order, making use of the same capacity as linear workflows. This layer therefore needs to be able to co-operate with the session & resource planning layers. On top of the these layers, an important role is with the umbrella management system as it needs to be able not only to control and monitor equipment (satellite modems / hubs+ video + MPLS), but also synchronize reservations and execution of workflows over the hybrid satellite/terrestrial network. An example here could be a live shoot transmitted from an SNG van over an occasional use satellite segment to the satellite hub, whereby the signal is relayed onto a MPLS network towards a studio. Depending on the specific eco-systems of this operator, there may be an extra layer, here represented by the ERP layer. Following the example this ERP layer hosts a session management and resource layer at a higher level, taking also availability of personnel and facilities into account. Ideally there is communication between the umbrella management layer and the ERP layer whereby the umbrella management extracts the required information in order to set up the workflows over the entire hybrid network and communicate back whether the action has succeeded or not. Finally there is the OSS/BSS layer communicating either directly with the ERP or the lower level layers. Focusing on the umbrella NMS layer, it needs to be able to set up a workflow across the hybrid network end to end, whereby terminals or stations connected to the network can have different connectivity. In this table a few of the pro’s of each solution are listed. As a conclusion: in order to seamlessly set up a management service across the hybrid network, the umbrella NMS must be able to plan the workflow independent of the connectivity situation of the connected stations, while making use of specialized tools to optimize the transport itself. In addition, it needs to communicate potentially with higher level management systems to import for example schedules or export data which are relevant for billing purposes. Looking at the Survey, what does the network evolution looks like? There seems to be a shift to more hybrid networks.   • #8: Live ‘distribution’ from the Hub can be supported. In this case, the Hub relays all traffic received to destination terminals. The distribution of content from the Hub to the satellite terminal(s) is over an always established FWD carrier that is received by all terminals. Potentially, conditional access restricts the reception of content to specific receivers.
