BENEDICT TERRY
GUIDANCE
Remember, you can add as much as you like to this plan – I’d
say it’s pretty much a given!
Don’t forget to convey ideas through visuals as well as
through your written plans and documents.
Delete the tutor written prompts where necessary
Final sequence(s) saved must be in 1920x1080 25fps .MOV
Export for YouTube in 1080x720 25fps .MP4

IDENT PACKAGE
1. IDENT PACKAGE
• This section is where you will be planning your overall
ident ‘package’
• This should include all design docs for your idents (min. 3
for the package)
• You should ensure that your package has a consistency of
design, font, colour, tone, etc.
• Consider giving you ident package a working title, try and
use a title that defines your concept
CONCEPT
Summarise your concept in a single statement, how does it
fit the audience and best represent the channel type you are
working on? You could add in visual aids to fully express
this.
Because I have chosen to make a universal entertainment
channel, so my ident will also have to appeal to as many
people as possible. I intend to make heavy emphasis on the
name of the channel, that being “The Grid”. I intend to use
wireframes in my idents, which emphasize the name of the
channel.
LOGO DESIGN
I intend to retain the logo design of one of two logo designs
present, as I intend to make idents for a universal entertainment
channel (i.e. the main channel), so it is ideal for people to know the
identity of the company.
I intend to make heavy emphasis on the name, so my theming may
involve wireframes and repeating patterns, made out of tube neon
lights switching on gradually and sometimes flickering, maybe a
whole string of lights switching off to form the logo with the lights
that remain on. The font of the text shall be “Mongolian Balti”.
SOUND DESIGN
What are sound design plans? How do you intend to create
these? Include some tests.
Because I have a synthesizer and a microphone at my
disposal, I can consider creating my own sound effects at
home. I could also consider using stock sounds from
websites such as freesound.org, though in some cases it
would be more expensive.
As I intend to use electric lighting, I could use electrical
buzzing, which is commonly associated with electrical
equipment. I could also consider ambience for the scene, e.g.
if I was using street lighting I could have the sound of cars
rushing by.
MOTION GRAPHICS AND
COMPOSITING TECHNIQUES
Explain the techniques you are using in your idents – you
MUST include a motion track, composite shots using at least
some original filmed footage and animated graphics [logo
and/or text]
I intend to use CGI animation to create the idents, as it will
help me with my intended career path of animation. I
originally intended to only use animation, but having noticed
that I also need to film live action footage I had to rethink my
concept allow for both animation and live-action, though I did
have this combination as a consideration.
Because I am combining live action and CG animation, I will
need to make effective use of tracking to keep the imagery
intact. I may also need to use masking to place objects
behind live action subjects to make the product appear more
convincing.
IDENT 1
IDENT 1
My plan for this ident is to start with a large group of lights arranged into squares. Gradually,
most of the lights deactivate to form the logo followed by the text appearing on a separate
layer. Because of the presence of lights, electrical buzzing is ideal while a ting noise when a
light switches off.
IDENT 2
IDENT 2
My plans for this ident run similar to that of my previous one, as it involves surrounding
elements gradually deactivating until a specifically arranged unit remains with text on a
separate layer. There is also the use of electrical buzzing and pings when the lights switch off.
There are some differences though, with the most obvious being the lack of a square logo in
favour of letter for a channel name: “Grid A”.
IDENT 3
IDENT 3
This ident has a more original concept, though keeping the light concept. It starts with a human
flicking a light switch, which activates fluorescent lights in the room that form the logo of the
company. They then activate a remote lamp also made of fluorescent lights and the final shot then
shows the lamp combining with a line of ceiling lights forming an “A” and establishing the overall
logo for the channel. The presence of electrical buzzing is also prominent, though the pings occur
when lights activate. There is also clicking when the switches are flipped.
FINAL IDENT TO
PRODUCE
Which ident are you going to move to production? Why have
you chosen this one? Consider viability, techniques, costs, etc?
I have decided to produce the third ident because I feel it is the most
visually and conceptually impressive of the three and allows more for
both CGI animation and After Effects, as I will need to track live-
action actors into the artificial environment in which the ident occurs.
In a realistic scenario, creating it could be very expensive. A brand
new factory seal retail box for Adobe After Effects CS6 would cost
£3.6k and the CGI animation software I intend to use, Autodesk 3DS
Max 2015 would cost £1.6k for an annual subscription. I should also
consider the cost of a computer suite to hire would be £120 per hour
in London. A more nearby example in York would start at £35 per
hour in Clifton and Tang Hall libraries. A home computer suite usually
costs £399.

SOUND PLANNING
I start with a click noise when the human actor flicks the
switch. This is followed with an electrical hum and a ping
whenever a light activates. I could also consider having
footsteps between switch flicks for movement between
switches. This is rounded off with some ambient music to
add atmosphere to the visuals in a similar way to that of
Channel 4.
