A REVIEW ON DATA ACQUISITION AND
CONTROL SYSTEM FOR INDUSTRIAL
AUTOMATION APPLICATION

ABSTRACT
In the last few years, in industries, systems are becoming very complex and
several technologies have already been introduced for industrial automation
such as some newly introduced connectivity solutions like Ethernet, Wireless
LAN, Wi-Fi, GPRS, etc. This paper provides an overview on recent
development of several technologies used in the industrial automation.
Keywords: Ethernet, Wireless LAN, Wi-Fi and GPRS.

1. INTRODUCTION
Industry has played a major role in human resource and the economical growth of the
country. In high-risk industries like chemical, electricity and cement industries, small
negligence may cause heavy economic losses and serious environmental pollution.
Data acquisition and processing plays an important role in the area of modern
industries, and the performance requirements like the system precision and size vary
according to different application areas. This system contains inbuilt data acquisition
control system with online interaction. It makes the system more reliable and avoids
more complication [5]. Internet, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, Wi-Fi, GPRS are playing an
important role in the daily life using these advanced technologies some advance

applications are developed by different researchers like security systems, utility
meters, Home automation, etc.
Figure 1 The overview of system.
Figure 1 shows the overview system. Here the system consists of three different
parts first is the industry or sensor and appliances to be monitored, Second one is the
system or Server and third one is user part or client. The client thus monitors various
parameter statuses through sensors and controls many industrial appliances with the
help of server. Every client can access the industry directly without any interaction
with additional server and modules. This type of system can be widely applied to
electric power, petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, steel, transportation, Electronic &
Electrical industries, Automobiles, agriculture and so on.
2. LITERATURE SURVEY
Bhushan R. Khangare, and Mrs. A. P. Rathakanthiwar [1], presents ARM Based
Embedded System for Industrial Application Using TCP/IP Network. This paper
provides design and development of IDACS i.e. online Interactive Data Acquisition
and Control system using ARM base embedded web server. Interactive Data
Acquisition and Control system is a digital distributed control system. In the proposed
system processing capability of a system was increased by using single chip IDACS.
Figure 2 shows the architecture of proposed system.

This system contains FLASH and MMC memories for program running and data
storage. This system can also worked on Real Time operating system because of

system uses ARM7 Processor portability which is based on multi tasking using
embedded C language. In addition this system uses the portable Thermal Printer,
GSM Module and MMC card. Thermal Printer is useful for printing real time data
and GSM Module is useful for long distance communication. MMC cards are useful
for data backup, which will provides an alternative interface for conventional control
and acquisition applications. All these features are useful for industrial applications.
D. U. SAI KIRAN [2], presents an design of ARM based data acquisition
&control using Ethernet. This system performs an intelligent work for data
acquisition, monitoring and output control. The proposed system is based on ARM
Processor which is used for diverse industrial applications involved with a real time
kernel for task management, multi-tasking etc. Embedded system designed provides a
generic design with all kind of data acquisition and control. Proposed system also
contains an embedded web server with all data by typing the IP address user get
webpage onscreen contains all the current status of the devices. This project is useful
or involves acquiring the temperature data from a boiler or machine and in turn
controlling the boilers through an Ethernet web server prior to the instrumental
damages or failures. Figure 3 shows the block diagram of design of data acquisition
system for industrial purpose.

Joby Antony et al. [3] presents a distributed and data acquisition and control
system based on embedded Web server is designed or a distributed data acquisition
and control system based on low cost embedded web server. This system is useful to
measure all kinds of electrical as well as thermal parameters like voltage, current,
thermocouple, RTD, and so on. The system adopts Browser/Server mode and control
the remote systems therefore the user to can see measured data on web pages from
anywhere from the world or at different geographical locations and also provides the
facility to manage the operation at the same time can be transmitted through RJ-45
Ethernet network to remote DDAS, this mode to acquire the signals and control the
devices remotely or DCS monitoring system by using HTTP protocol. Figure 4 shows
the whole structure of system.

This system is mainly used for the concentrative acquisition and conversion of a
variety of electrical and thermal signals and also uses remote I/O data acquisition
modules are developed as embedded web servers having static IP with port 80, which
can be widely used to diversified industries such as electric power, petroleum,
chemical, metallurgy, steel, transportation and so on.
Miss. Gayatri B. Kulkarni and Prof. S. G. Joshi [4], presents a low-cost, Internet-
based Real Time Data Acquisition and Control System Using ARM9 & GPRS
Technology. In this paper users can monitor & control remote machines/systems by
using embedded web server hence system contains GPRS technology along with
GSM makes it accessible from anywhere in the world. Idea is utilized for DAC by
using Advanced RISC machine (ARM 9) processor & in-build web server application
with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology. This system allows user
direct bidirectional communication and reducing overhead, which can be vitally
important for some real-time applications and also support both static and dynamic
IPs. This system can be widely applied to electric power, petroleum, chemical,
metallurgy, steel, transportation, Electronic & Electrical industries, Automobiles and
so on. This proposed system contains Embedded Web Server architecture, which are
user friendly, low cost, supports to real time application, low maintainability,
portability, high reliability, and security, controllability which general purpose
computers cannot give and Data Acquisition System, which contains a portable ARM
9 processor, this hardware built on a single chip module. An ARM processor is
responsible for handling all tasks like measuring & conversion of signals, data base
updating, communicating with owner by sending HTML pages. An ARM 9 processor
manages all tasks in parallel in small amounts of time.
S. P. Rahul Santosh and K. Somasekhara Rao [5], presents a real time interactive
data acquisition and control system using ARM9. This proposed system contains
ADC, Digital acquisition is done by special ADC, data base, the measured data are
stored in external memory in which the memory acts as a data base during web server
mode, and ARM processor, the ARM processor directly supports the Ethernet service
and RS232 communication, hence the data has been stored and controlled by some
other PCs or network via RS232 & Ethernet and also contains internal I2C module.
Internal I2C module has the ability to communicate with any other peripherals.

Special Web server is used because of the general purpose web servers compose of an
operating system, the web pages or the application and a huge amount of memory and
sometimes a special hardware hence to get access on an embedded system Web
browser is the Web server. Embedded web server mode is used to share the data with
clients in online. Embedded ARM system is used for the data acquisition and control
system such as the function, reliability, cost, size, power consumption, and remote
access, etc. proposed system is operated by DACS mode to acquire the signals and
control the devices remotely
3. CONCLUSION
This paper provides an overview for data acquisition and control system for industrial
automation application. Literature survey provides detailed information about the
existing systems.

Kharde E&TC Department, Shreeyash College of Engg. & Tech, Dr. BAMU University, Aurangabad (MS), India ABSTRACT In the last few years, in industries, systems are becoming very complex and several technologies have already been introduced for industrial automation such as some newly introduced connectivity solutions like Ethernet, Wireless LAN, Wi-Fi, GPRS, etc. This paper provides an overview on recent development of several technologies used in the industrial automation. INTRODUCTION Industry has played a major role in human resource and the economical growth of the country. In high-risk industries like chemical, electricity and cement industries, small negligence may cause heavy economic losses and serious environmental pollution. Data acquisition and processing plays an important role in the area of modern industries, and the performance requirements like the system precision and size vary according to different application areas. This system contains inbuilt data acquisition control system with online interaction. It makes the system more reliable and avoids more complication [5]. Internet, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, Wi-Fi, GPRS are playing an important role in the daily life using these advanced technologies some advance

Figure 1 shows the overview system. Here the system consists of three different parts first is the industry or sensor and appliances to be monitored, Second one is the system or Server and third one is user part or client. The client thus monitors various parameter statuses through sensors and controls many industrial appliances with the help of server. Every client can access the industry directly without any interaction with additional server and modules. This type of system can be widely applied to electric power, petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, steel, transportation, Electronic & Electrical industries, Automobiles, agriculture and so on. 2. LITERATURE SURVEY Bhushan R. Khangare, and Mrs. A. P. Rathakanthiwar [1], presents ARM Based Embedded System for Industrial Application Using TCP/IP Network. This paper provides design and development of IDACS i.e. online Interactive Data Acquisition and Control system using ARM base embedded web server. Interactive Data Acquisition and Control system is a digital distributed control system. In the proposed system processing capability of a system was increased by using single chip IDACS. Figure 2 shows the architecture of proposed system. Figure 2 Block diagram of Proposed Architecture [1]. This system contains FLASH and MMC memories for program running and data storage. In addition this system uses the portable Thermal Printer, GSM Module and MMC card. Thermal Printer is useful for printing real time data and GSM Module is useful for long distance communication. MMC cards are useful for data backup, which will provides an alternative interface for conventional control and acquisition applications. All these features are useful for industrial applications. D. U. SAI KIRAN [2], presents an design of ARM based data acquisition &control using Ethernet. This system performs an intelligent work for data acquisition, monitoring and output control. The proposed system is based on ARM Processor which is used for diverse industrial applications involved with a real time kernel for task management, multi-tasking etc. Embedded system designed provides a generic design with all kind of data acquisition and control. Proposed system also contains an embedded web server with all data by typing the IP address user get webpage onscreen contains all the current status of the devices. This project is useful or involves acquiring the temperature data from a boiler or machine and in turn controlling the boilers through an Ethernet web server prior to the instrumental damages or failures. Joby Antony et al. [3] presents a distributed and data acquisition and control system based on embedded Web server is designed or a distributed data acquisition and control system based on low cost embedded web server. This system is useful to measure all kinds of electrical as well as thermal parameters like voltage, current, thermocouple, RTD, and so on. The system adopts Browser/Server mode and control the remote systems therefore the user to can see measured data on web pages from anywhere from the world or at different geographical locations and also provides the facility to manage the operation at the same time can be transmitted through RJ-45 Ethernet network to remote DDAS, this mode to acquire the signals and control the devices remotely or DCS monitoring system by using HTTP protocol. Figure 4 shows the whole structure of system.

This system is mainly used for the concentrative acquisition and conversion of a variety of electrical and thermal signals and also uses remote I/O data acquisition modules are developed as embedded web servers having static IP with port 80, which can be widely used to diversified industries such as electric power, petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, steel, transportation and so on. Miss. Gayatri B. Kulkarni and Prof. S. G. Joshi [4], presents a low-cost, Internet- based Real Time Data Acquisition and Control System Using ARM9 & GPRS Technology. In this paper users can monitor & control remote machines/systems by using embedded web server hence system contains GPRS technology along with GSM makes it accessible from anywhere in the world. Idea is utilized for DAC by using Advanced RISC machine (ARM 9) processor & in-build web server application with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology. This system allows user direct bidirectional communication and reducing overhead, which can be vitally important for some real-time applications and also support both static and dynamic IPs. This system can be widely applied to electric power, petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, steel, transportation, Electronic & Electrical industries, Automobiles and so on. This proposed system contains Embedded Web Server architecture, which are user friendly, low cost, supports to real time application, low maintainability, portability, high reliability, and security, controllability which general purpose computers cannot give and Data Acquisition System, which contains a portable ARM 9 processor, this hardware built on a single chip module. An ARM processor is responsible for handling all tasks like measuring & conversion of signals, data base updating, communicating with owner by sending HTML pages. An ARM 9 processor manages all tasks in parallel in small amounts of time. S. P. Rahul Santosh and K. Somasekhara Rao [5], presents a real time interactive data acquisition and control system using ARM9. This proposed system contains ADC, Digital acquisition is done by special ADC, data base, the measured data are stored in external memory in which the memory acts as a data base during web server mode, and ARM processor, the ARM processor directly supports the Ethernet service and RS232 communication, hence the data has been stored and controlled by some other PCs or network via RS232 & Ethernet and also contains internal I2C module. Internal I2C module has the ability to communicate with any other peripherals.

Embedded web server mode is used to share the data with clients in online. Embedded ARM system is used for the data acquisition and control system such as the function, reliability, cost, size, power consumption, and remote access, etc. proposed system is operated by DACS mode to acquire the signals and control the devices remotely 3. CONCLUSION This paper provides an overview for data acquisition and control system for industrial automation application. Literature survey provides detailed information about the existing systems.
