We still get ill because our bodies have not encountered every type of microorganism before. Each microorganism has different antigen shapes on its surface that our immune systems must learn to recognize. When a new microorganism enters our bodies, we will not have the matching antibody yet to fight the infection. It takes time for our bodies to produce the correctly shaped antibody to destroy the microorganism as it reproduces and causes disease symptoms. Once the right antibody is made, it binds to the microorganism and marks it for destruction by immune cells.
