What is social Media?
 A social Media service is an online service, or
website that focuses on building and reflecting of
social relations among people.
 These people are connected through same interest
or networks
 Most social media services are web-based and
provide means of users to interact over the
internet, such as email and instant messaging
 The use of dedicated web site to communicate
informally with other members of site, by posting
messages and photographs,etc
How it all started?
 Many social Media web sites are lunched in the
1990s.
 In India ORKUT was first social Media web sites
that actually attracted users towards the idea of
building up the social networks.
 Orkut was followed by MySpace, Facebook, Twitter
and now Google+.
Different social Media services
 Social Media can be done mainly in 3 ways-
Social Media web sites
Instant messaging services
Video calling
Social Media websites
 A website that enables users to create public profiles
within that website.
 Used to form relationships with other users of the
same website who access their profile.
 Orkut , Facebook, MySpace , Google+ and Twitter
Instant messaging services
 The exchange of typed messages between computer
users in real time via the Internet.
 Now available as feature in most of the school Media
websites like Facebook, Google+, Etc...
 Independent instant messaging services are yahoo
messenger, Gtalk, MSN messenger, meebo,etc.
Video conferencing
 Communication between two people on different
sites by using computer networks to transmit audio
and video data .
 A web cam and microphone are required.
 Skype, yahoo messenger, Lotus Live are some of the
common video conferencing platforms
ORKUT
 Orkut is a social Media websites lunched in
2004,owned and operated by Google Inc.
 One of the most visited websites in India and
brazil.
 Named after its creator, Google employee Orkut
Buyukkokten.
 Allows user to make a profile on the web sites and
add people as a friends.
 Users share videos, pictures ,polls to be viewed and
participated in by their friends and other users
Facebook
 Biggest revolution in the world of social Media.
 Founded in 2004 mark zukerberg with his collage
roommates.
 Facebook has more than 800 million active users it
is largest social networks.
 It is the largest social network in the world
Twitter
 It is a online social Media and micro blogging
services.
 Created by Jack Dolsry and lunched in 2006.
 Enables its users to send and read text-based posts
of up to 140 characters, Informally known as
“tweets”.
 User can follow other people based on their interest.
 The user name is formally referred to as “handle”.
 It is the rapid mode if communication, has 200 million
users.
 Some times described as ”SMS of the internet”
Google +
 Google Inc.'s new baby the social Media world
after ORKUT started loosing its sheen with a
Facebook gaining much more popularity.
 Lunched in aug,2011 in a “invite only” testing face.
 Became hugely popular, with the 40 million users
within one month of being lunched
 Users can add fellow users in their circles and
interact with them.
 Google+ has a ”+1 button” on the same grounds as
of Facebook's "likes” button.
 Users can add pictures and edit them on the
website itself.
Skype
 Most popular way of allowing users to make voice
and video calls and chat over the internet.
 Skype has 663 million registered users as of
September 2011.
 Calls to other users within the Skype service are
free

 Lack of anonymity
