what is e-learning?
• “E-learning Is the use of any electronic technology
to aid in the acquisition and development of
knowledge and understanding in order to
demonstrate and positively influence behaviors”
(aadm, 2009).
Benefits of e-learning
• it can be very cost effective
• it can save time
• it minimizes any travel costs
• it can offer more individualized instruction
Collaboration and related
tools
• email
• whiteboards
• bulletin board systems
• chat lines for online presentation tools
• collaborative learning portals
Ways that learners can
communicate and interact
• discussion boards
• email
• online presentations and lectures
Instructional design
models
• Merril’s first principles of instruction
Bloom’s Learning and
Taxonomy
leveraging technology to
enhance learning
• students can create rather than listening and
taking notes. Having engaging lessons that use
technology will impact positively on the learning
outcomes (Walsh, 2007).
Leveraging continued
• encouraging new forms and outlets for the
students creativity, collaborating skills, and
tapping into their world to make learning seem
more relevant (Walsh, 2007).
Best practices for media use
• it can be very beneficial to use YouTube videos or
articles in the online classroom to enhance the
learning of a topic.
Ways to manage virtual
courses
• time management
• being present in the classroom
• grading efficiently and effectively
managing virtual classrooms
continued
• consider holding a live lecture session using tools
such as:
• Adobe connect
• Wimba
ways to teach in a virtual
classroom
• have a dependable calendar
• send reminders often
• email students with clarification if an assignment
might seem confusing
• hold live sessions at least once a week
teaching continued
• consider adding a social media group such as a
Facebook group to your class.
Research new
technologies
• as an online instructor – you should always
research new technologies that are available for
your classroom.
• There are many workshops available online that
can teach you about the new technologies.
• Make sure that you are communicating with your
coworkers and networking with other faculty to get
new ideas from them as well

Implementing e learning

Editor's Notes

  • #3  e-learning can be done in any classroom setting as well as in online educational programs.
  • #4  speaking in terms of a college online program – it can be very cost-effective to be able to learn from anywhere you have an Internet connection. You do not have to pay for travel costs associated with driving to class, which can also save you time. Also, you can individualize your program according to your educational and career goals.
  • #5  collaboration is a very important part of the educational process. There are many tools that can provide collaboration with the e-learning. Using emails for students to interact is one of those. Online presentation tools and whiteboards are available for the instructor and students to collaborate anywhere there is an Internet connection.
  • #6  these provide the students the ability to still have that communication with their classmates.
  • #7  this design model discusses the problem at hand as the essential issue. Integration, activation, application, and demonstration, areways to address those problems. (Instructional, 2012).
  • #8  Bloom identified six levels within the cognitive domain starting with the basic evaluation and ending with the knowledge received (Instructional, 2012).
  • #9  in the online classroom environment, students are not sitting there listening to a teacher and taking notes. They are actively engaged in doing. It is hands-on, whether they are researching material for an assignment, or working on an online tool.
  • #10  there are so many tools available, as discussed before, that the students can tap into to make their assignments more interesting and more personal.
  • #11  When you are giving feedback to your students regarding their discussion topics – look for a relevant YouTube video or a short online article that can support your feedback.
  • #12  online or virtual classrooms can be very scary for students at first. Knowing that the instructor is there for them by seeing the instructor active in the discussion forum, and also getting feedback quickly for assignments can help to make the students feel that their instructor is there for them
  • #13  I would suggest holding a live learning session or live office hours at least once a week so that students can actually collaborate live with each other and with their instructor. It means a lot to an online student to be able to hear their instructors voice – and even see their face with the use of the WebCam. It really helps to build that trust and community in the classroom.
  • #14  having a dependable calendar, where the weeks have similar due dates, discussions, and written assignments that the student can become familiar with. Send reminders the night before an assignment is due, email the students with any written assignment directions that you might anticipate getting questions on, and again, hold live sessions so that the students can ask questions and collaborate with each other
  • #15  Facebook is one of the most popular social media groups out there. There are easy ways to set up an online classroom group where the students can basically Facebook each other, and the instructor can leave reminders and small articles or videos related to the classroom contents. It is really a great way to be able to communicate with your students as many of the students have Facebook pages and can get alerts on their phones or computer every time they get a message.
  • #16  online education is ever changing. There are new technologies that come out all of the time. Have a good network of coworkers and friends that you can reach out to with new ideas. Take advantage of anything offered by your educational institution as far as learning development where you might be able to learn how to use a new technology. Implement these technologies in your classroom when you are able to. Experiment!
