and conventions or real media
products
The trailer begins with a green screen warning
the viewer about the age restrictions. This is
convectional in trailers as it stops people who
are too young and will be disturbed from
watching the trailer.
The first clip from the film is a dramatic clip of
the protagonist trying to escape from the
antagonist. This is done to grip the viewer and
get them excited about the film from the off.
This develops the convention of the structure of
equilibrium, dis-equilibrium, new equilibrium
(Todorov), like what happens in insidious, as the
trailer starts with dis-equilibriuma.
The next clip is a close up of a ticking clock. This diagetic
noise of the clock ticking gives pace and rhythm to the
trailer as shots are timed and edited around the fast
tempo of the clock ticking. The clock provides a sense of
time, and becomes a sound bridge across the start of the
trailer. When the metronome stops later on in the trailer,
it gives a sense that time has stopped or has ran out. This
follows conventions in the horror genre, as is shown from
the metronome in insidious.
The industry logos from the production
companies that made the trailer are
shown towards the start of the trailer. This
means that a viewer who sees the logos
and trusts the companies will then trust
that the film will be good and see the film.
The follows conventions of film trailers, as
shown by the woman in black.
The characters in the clip are shown to be ‘average
youths’. One of them is drinking in the middle of
the day which conveys them to be a bad example
of members in society, a convention in horror films
as shown by ‘the cabin in the woods’ and
someone smoking. The characters are texting
which presents them as ordinary stereotypical
youths, meaning the viewer will be able to relate
to them, my audience research showed around a
third of the target audience is Christian, and out of
the three main characters, one of them is wearing
a cross necklace. By making my character
relatable, I’m following conventions which are also
followed in ‘insidious’ by making the character
relatable. This show is set in the day time with
high key lighting to convey the characters safety,
the relationship between light and the characters
safety is a convention which I followed as does the
film ‘the woman in black’. This section of the
trailer is giving the back story for the character, in
order for the audience to get to know them and
sympathise for them later on, a convection which
is also followed in ‘it follows’.
The minion toy in this part of the trailer helps to
convey how the female character is childlike and
neieve, a convention that commonly occurs in
horror films, for example ‘scream,’. The man in the
towel builds on already existing conventions as the
fact that he isn’t fully clothed gives the film ‘sex
appeal’ and will attract viewers, however, because
almost half of my audience are girls, instead of the
conventional ‘girl in a bra to attract guys’ I
swapped it round to a ‘guy in a towel to attract
girls’. The convention of using sex to sell a film is
also in ‘it follows,’. The characters are presumed of
to have had sex, the theme of sex is a convention
of the horror genre which is also shown in the film
‘the final girls,’.
In this clip, the protagonist reveals that she is
pregnant. This develops the convention in horror
films of child endangerment, which can be shown
in ‘child's play’, the convention is developed in my
trailer as it’s not a child that’s being put in harms
way but a foetus.
At this point in the trailer a cold filter suddenly come on, using
colour correction builds on conventions as there is a drastic
change and it isn’t consistent, because when the drama starts,
that’s when the cold filter comes in to convey to the viewer the
change between equilibrium and dis equilibrium. A film that
uses a cold filter is ‘dark was the knight’. The scene also uses
jump buts to put the viewer on edge and disorientate them,
this follows conventions, a film that also does this is ‘psycho’.
The previous and the next scene are connected by a ‘dip to
white’, the fade between the two scenes conveys to the viewer
that they are connected and that the dialogue ‘don’t open to the
box,’ is connected to the opening of the box in the next scene.
This follows conventions and is also done in the film ‘it follows’
This scene is set in the dark with chiaroscuro lighting and
uses shaky cam, to convey to the viewer that something bad
is about to happen and that they should be scared, that
shaky camera makes them feel apart of the action and that
they are with the characters in what they are doing, a
convection which is also followed in the film ‘animal’
When the voice over comes in, there is a black out, this is done to
build suspense and tension before the montage starts. The use of a
voice over follows conventions and is also done in the film
‘gremlins’, as it is an effective way to convey the plot to a viewer
without showing too much of the film or making the trailer too
long. The use of black outs to build tension and suspense also
follows conventions and is done in the film ‘cub’
This scene shows the protagonist talking with a lawyer, who is a
female. This defies conventions as the convention in horror films is
that women are seen more as objects or a ‘lower sex’, as shown in
‘you’re next’ so by having a female as a professional lawyer; it’s
creating a positive representation for woman and is attracting the
44% of my target audience who are females.
In this section jump cuts are used to put the viewer on edge and
make them feel disjointed. This develops conventions as in the scene
the actress is bleeding to death, and doing the jump cuts, cuts down
on the screen time of the blood; this is done to tease the gore in the
trailer – making viewers want to see the film to see the full thing.
This clip builds on the convention of religious symbolism. Many
horror films use symbolism, in particular Christianity, for example
‘the exorcist’, however, I developed this convention by using
symbolism of a Scandinavian folk tale which most likely will be
unknown to the target demographic, this means that they won’t
know the story and a ‘happy ending’ isn’t guaranteed.
This section follows the convention of the authorities not helping.
The police man in this section fails to spots the antagonist, this
conveys to the viewer that the protagonist is alone and the
authorities can’t save her, making them want to see the film to see
if she’s okay. The convention of the authorities not being good at
their job is also in the film ‘demonic’
The high angle close up shows the protagonists
scared emotion and how weak and vulnerable she
is. This follows horror conventions, the high angle
to show powerlessness is also shown in ‘insidious’
where as the close up showing the protagonists
scared emotion is in ‘the women in black’.
The climax of the trailer is right at the end, this follows conventions as
it’s the last thing the viewer will remember, however this scene is 14
seconds long which builds upon the trailer convention of having scenes
about 5 seconds long like in ‘the Blair with project’. By making it the this
scene longer it has more impact on the viewer as the un nerving feeling
lingers more.
The trailer ends with a release date and
social media links, this follows conventions,
like in ‘the gallows’ as by doing this it is an
easy way for the viewer to be able to find
out more information about the film. The
website isn’t shown which builds upon
conventions, this is because a website is
longer and not as memorable as a social
media link and as most people under 30
have one of the social media provided it
would be easier for them to find the
website on a social media page.
I followed the convention of putting a
slogan onto the poster in order to give
more information about the film, this
helps to make the film poster more
memorable and use direct address to
engage the viewer.
I followed the convention of
putting reviews on the poster,
so that people know it’s a good
film and will want to see it
I followed the convention of putting
social media links on the poster, this
allows a consumer to find out more
information about the film easier.
I developed the convention of having the release
date on the poster by changing the mode of address
by saying “everywhere” this fits with the genre
more because it’s like the antagonist is everywhere.
I followed the convention of having
the cast, crew and production
company on the poster, so that
people who like their work will
want to see the film, thinking it will
be of equal quality.
I followed the convention of having
the age rating on the poster, however
I developed it by having it be bigger
than expected, this makes it more
clear the film is an 18 but the larger
size looks more astatically pleasing
with the composition
The poster is more gory than
with conventional horror
posters, this was done so the
poster stands out and make
the genre more clear
The protagonist could be seen to be in an aggressive pose,
this builds on the convection that the main character isn’t
always the ‘good guy’ as by where the blood splatter is and
how she is holding the knife, it could be seen that she is
killing someone. The hint of a plot twister in the poster build
on conventions and gets the viewer to want to see the film to
find out what happens.
I followed the conventions
of putting a masterhead
on the cover so people
know the magazine and
regular buyers will buy it
I challenged conventions by adding
grey colour scheme this helps the
magazine to be original helping the
magazine to stand out
Used the coverlines so people
who don’t care about the film
will still buy the magazine to
get the rest of the content
The lure of the free poster is to try and
persuade people to by the magazine. I
developed the convention by not showing
the whole poster to intrigue people to try
and find the full poster making them more
likely to see the film or read the magazine.
The pugs are in the bottom
corner, following conventions, as
they are easily covered up by a
thumb.
The model is behind the masterhead, this
subverts magazine cover conventions, I did
this to keep mystery about the character,
and imply that there's more to her than
what's on the cover.
I follow the convention of having
a humorous pull quote ‘I’m
surprised they trusted me with a
knife’ in order to use humour to
sell the magazine’
I build upon the convention of not
always having the models head
behind the master head, this was
done to convey that the character is
trapped in the film so she is trapped
in the cover and isn’t reaching out.
Gramsci’s Hegemony
• The trailer subverts from traditional hegemony as the characters at
the start of the film are shown to be drinking and having sex out of
wedlock, if the film supported traditional hegemony the characters
would be in school or employment and doing something productive
with their life's.
• By subverting traditional hegemony, the trailer builds upon
conventions as it’s showing
Neale The Gay Gaze
• The trailer builds upon the convention of the gay gaze. The majority
of the target audience are men, despite this, the clip of the man in
just a towel provides a homoerotic undertone to the trailer.
