Karnataka is home to many polluting industries such as iron, steel, paper, and chemical plants. Industrial activities cause water pollution, air pollution, and hazardous waste. The government introduced laws in 1947 and 1981 to control water and air pollution from industries. There are over 11,000 registered industries in Karnataka, with 160 classified as highly polluting. The pollution control board categorizes industries as red, orange, and green based on pollution levels, with red industries required to locate furthest from sensitive areas. Industrial pollution causes health issues for humans through contaminated water and air pollution. An action plan is needed that includes cleaner production technologies, mandatory environmental audits for highly polluting industries, and improved river water quality monitoring.
