Initial Ideas & Context
Aidan Jones
Pre-proposal
• For the FMP I want to make a photography
magazine. This would present a few amazing
cameras, and reviews for them. I would also
be sharing photography tips and various
different photos that I have taken.
• I may also create a short advert that would
present a new show that will be shown on tv. I
will be presented by a famous National
Geographic Photographer who will be
travelling the world showing off many
different spectacular locations and the
animals that live there – and how they have
adapted over time to the climate.
Initial Reaction
At first, I was unsure about what I wanted to do for
the FMP. I thought about making a short
advertisement video for a clothing brand.
After some more thought, I decided that something
that I may want to do more would be to create a
photography magazine. This would be to show off
some of the photos that I have taken myself, a few
photography tips dotted around, and some reviews
for different types of cameras and lenses. I was then
thinking about making a short advert to present a
new show for people to watch on tv.
I could possibly add in some fact files about different
animals that you may find in the different locations
(in the magazine).
Skills Audit
Strengths Weaknesses
I think that my Photoshop skills have definitely
improved. They will be helpful to use in my FMP.
Time management can sometimes be an issue, but I
will try my hardest to keep on top of it throughout
this project.
I definitely feel more confident using Premier Pro. This
piece of software will be using if I decide to make a
small advert for a tv show.
I tend to struggle with starting to generate ideas. But,
once I start off with an idea, I can keep the ideas
flowing forwards.
I have an amateur understanding and knowledge of
what settings I should use for a couple of styles of
photography.
I don't have an expert understanding and knowledge
of what settings or lenses to use for the different
types of photography.
I am good at looking around and finding good shots
and viewpoints. I can see things from different
perspectives that someone else might not be able to.
I am pretty good at using Photoshop, Lightroom, and
Premier Pro, but I feel like I want to know more. So
that I have more flexibility when it comes to editing. I
will have to do some research on this.
Mind Map
Mood Board Analysis
• I will be taking a look at each of the images when I am photographing that particular style.
• I will be using the images, from each of the slides above, as inspiration for my photos (not to copy them completely).
• Some of the styles of the photos may cross over.
• For example:
• Abstract & Random.
• Urban & Abstract.
• Sunset / Sunrise & Spring.
• The moods may cross over as well.
• For example:
• A beautiful sunset with a golden sun / A collection of light bulbs glowing in the darkness.
• They both give off a WARM feeling.
Influence /
Inspiration
• National Geographic is a popular American
monthly magazine published by the National
Geographic Society.
• It is known for its Photojournalism and is one
of the most widely read magazines of all time.
• The first issue was released September 22nd,
1888! It only cost 50 cents. However, it
included no photos.
• In 1905, the magazines started to contain
photos.
• In 1910, its first coloured photos were added.
• In later years, the magazine started to include
talks about environmental issues.
Influence / Inspiration
• Frans Lanting is a Dutch Photographer.
• He has taken a lot of absolutely amazing
photos. Some of them have been used for a
few different magazines and magazine
companies – National Geographic & BBC
Wildlife.
• Frans Lanting has also written quite a few
books. In these he presents some of the
photos that he has taken, and he writes a little
about the animal, the experience, the location,
and the date.
Influence / Inspiration
• Paul Nicklen is a Canadian photographer, film-maker,
author, and marine biologist.
• I really enjoy looking at Paul Nicklen’s pictures.
• The photographs are really high quality, and they make
me want to create / take pictures that are just as good.
• I am fascinated by his story of how he grew up, and
why he turned to photography.
• This quote is really powerful: “Bridge the gap between
science and people, using the power of visual
storytelling.
• He began studying marine biology at the University Of
Victoria, by his twenties. It was around this time that
the idea to photograph the wildlife that he grew up
with was sparked within himself.

Influence /
Inspiration
• Brian Skerry is a photographer and photojournalist
who specializes in marine wildlife and underwater
environments.
• Since 1988 he has been contributing, with his
amazing photos, to the National Geographic Society.
• During the 1990’s he published photos and wrote
stories for a variety of scuba diving magazines.
• In 1998 Brian Skerry received his first assignment for
National Geographic Magazine. He has published 23
feature stories in National Geographic Magazine and
contributed to 4 additional stories.

Why are you making this project?
• I really enjoy taking different types of photographs.
• I also really enjoy sharing them with people.
• I want to present something that I am passionate about.
• I want to show people how great photography is, and maybe inspire people to start taking photos for pleasure.
• I want to have a career that involves cameras in the future. I want to do something like being part of a camera crew for
a movie, or for a nature program like Blue Planet. I may want to be a Professional Photographer, or a Photojournalist. I
want to see the world whilst doing something that I love.
Hopes for the FMP
• I hope to create a Photography Magazine for my FMP.
• It will have one page per style of photography.
• On that one page for each style, there will be one or two tips dotted around the double page spread.
• There will be a double page spread, or two, containing reviews of cameras.
• And there will also be a little box on each, photography style, page saying which lens and camera settings is best for the style.
• I may also create a small advert to show of a photography and nature program that will be released soon.
• I could possibly add in some fact files about different animals that you may find in the different locations (in the magazine).
Strengths & Limitations
• Strength: I know some things about what would make a good photo.
• Limitation: I don't have expert knowledge on what settings the camera should be on for the different type / style of
photography.
• Strength: I have access to places, where I can take the photos that I need, near me.
• Limitation: They may be closed, or too full.
• Strength: The photos may turn out really great – focus, lighting, FPS.
• Limitation: The photos may not turn out great – out of focus, poor lighting, incorrect FSP.
• Strength: The weather could be really good for taking the outdoor photos,
• Limitation: The weather could be disappointing and inappropriate for the photography.
Potential Research Activities

• ^Outdoor photography tips ^
• Think about the target audience. Age ? - ? , level – expert, amateur, beginner.
• What settings to use for the different styles of photography.
• Ways of using editing software, that will make my photos look really good.
• Reviews on the different types of cameras.
• What lenses to use on the camera for each type / style of photography.
Rational From The Proposal
• The first product that I made was the ‘Who Is It? (The Talking Heads)’ lip sync music video. I had never really used a camera before, so it was a really good experience
learning about how to use it for different things.
• The next product that I made was ‘The Key Movie’. It involved someone finding a key and trying to figure out what it unlocks. I had never used Premier Pro before, so my
editing skills were rubbish. I didn’t really know how to use the piece of software, so it is long because it includes a lot of the blooper shots.
• Following that, I made the Hip To Be Square Music Video which involved Harry Statham & Alexis Ratcliffe being the performers. I operated the camera again, but I had
some experience, so I was much more confident in knowing what I was doing. I also had used Premier Pro a few times, so I was more confident using it as well. Plus,
Scott gave me some tips and taught me how to add backgrounds onto the green screen.
• After that, I made the Shaun Of The Dead Foley Clip. For this we had a short clip from a Zombie / Comedy film, and we had to add sound into the background for the
different actions. We had to record the sound effects ourselves, but they were only simple things like walking, running, closing a gate.
• The next project was The Murky Midnight Monstrosity Audio Project. In this project we had to research horror stories and local myths, to then read them and be inspired
to write a short story. We then had to read the story out loud and record it. We could then add effects and sound effects into the audio clip to make it sound better and /
or fit the mood that we are trying to convey. During this project I got to gain some more experience using Premier Pro and Adobe Audition.
• The most recent project has been the Pixel Art Project. At the start of this project, we had to research about adventure stories and how to write one. We had to create
style sheets and make tables showing off our movie idea generations. We then had to make synopses and proposals for each idea. Then we had to create advertisement
pieces (Magazine Front Cover, Magazine Double Page Spread, Movie Poster) for one movie idea that we had picked to be our final idea. After this, we then had to covert
our movie idea into a video game conception. The video game would be a 2D pixel game from the scrolling view. We had to create mood boards, mind maps, and slides
showing off pixel art games which have a similar concept to the one that we were making. After this, we had a go at using a website called Pixilart.com to experiment
how we wanted the game to look like – The level setting, the character/s appearance, the weapons and rewards. The next thing to do was to make some animations of
some pixel art creation/s, on Photoshop. I made an animated logo, and an animated background for a level. We then had to produce the short clip that shows off the
game and write an evaluation for it.
• From this project, I picked up and improved on a lot of skills – Using Photoshop more confidently and making better quality work, Using Premier Pro more confidently
and strongly.
• I will be using a lot of these skills whilst doing my next project – Photography Magazine FMP.
