Technology is quickly becoming
an integral part of classroom instruction.
• Technology provides students with a full-coverage educational
experience
• Offers educators effective ways to reach different types of learners
• Brings excitement to education, increases student engagement and
motivation
• Promotes learner independence, allows for learning at own pace,
enabling learners to make their own decisions and think for themselves
• Accelerates the acquisition of phonics, increases vocabulary, improves
fluency and reading-comprehension skills
Technology is just a piece of the puzzle for
education...
One that can provide limitless
opportunities for students and
learning
How often do you use an iPad?
What do you use them for?
How many of you have one for personal use?
How about in the classroom?
Technology Tools for the ESL Classroom
• iPads/Tablets
• Learning English can be very difficult and
frustrating at times. Apps on iPads and tablets
are great ways for students to practice English
and have fun while doing it
• Webpages
• Whether they are visiting social media sites,
reading or listening to the news or
participating in online discussions, these
experiences are rich and meaningful.
• Web Quests-Web quests are a fun way for
students to use the Internet to build English
proficiency
• Podcasts
• Students can listen to podcasts to improve their
comprehension.
• There are multiple podcasts tailored
specifically for English language learners
• Online Games
• Students can master spelling, grammar and
other English skills by playing games on the
computer or mobile devices
• Digital versions of hangman, Scrabble and
Boggle are also entertaining for all ages of
students. Many of these games can be put up
on interactive white boards to get full class
participation.
Can an iPad help students learn?
With the recent popularity
of iOS devices in school
districts it is essential for
educators to understand
how to implement Blooms
in the classroom using the
apps that are available.
If so, how?
Using Blooms Taxonomy in
education is a highly
effective way to scaffold
learning for the students.
What do you look for when choosing an App?
Utilizing Blooms Taxonomy
Rubrics and other evaluation forms
Helpful ways to determine which apps to use
Activity
 Using the Rubric and App evaluation checklist find where one of the
apps you use fit for educational use
Finding Quality Education Apps
• Take into account what you already do and how you can change it to use
technology
• Find out if and how the app can support the content you're teaching
• Choose apps that are both fun and informative
• Determine what the app can be used for
• Take time to explore the app
• Is it engaging, easy to use, flexible?
• Consider how using the app allows students to practice their skills
• Does the app provide immediate feedback?
• Does it offer increased difficulty as students progress?
• Will it save the students progress as they go?

Web Based Learning Tools
What are you using for web resources?
How often do you utilize websites for
learning?
Websites
• Online educational activities provide an engaging
environment that is easy to navigate, engaging to
participate in and encourages face-to-face conversation
• Useful for Various levels and all English skills
• Provide a vast amount of learning formats (games, puzzles,
quizzes, and more)
• For in-class use, homework, review, or activities
• Offer tools like Web Quest (an inquiry-oriented lesson
format in which most or all the information that learners
work with comes from the web)
Web Quest:
Web quests are a fun way for students to use the Internet to build English
proficiency. Students are given a task and rely on their content knowledge
and grasp of English language to complete it. Teachers can create their
own or visit Web Quests to access tutorials and databases of pre-created
web quests.
Podcasts
• Listening Comprehension:
• Podcasts are a great resource for listening comprehension
material in your ESL class.
• Most of them are relatively short, so you can easily give a listen
on your own, before your students arrive, and come up with a
few comprehension questions for your students to answer after
they listen
• Accent:
• You will find more authentic speech patterns and English
pronunciation in podcasts.
• This can be a challenge for your students’ listening skills, but one
they would do well to master. In addition to accent, your students
will also encounter regional dialect differences including
vocabulary and slang..
Podcasts
• Preview before Reading:
• If you are going to introduce a new content unit to your students, a
podcast might be the way to bring up the subject.
• You don’t have to test your students on what they hear, but you might
want to play a topic-related podcast for your class. Then ask them what
they understood while they listened, what topic it was about, and what
they already know about the topic.
• For Homework:
• Sometimes listening homework is hard to assign, especially if your
listening materials are only available in your classroom. For a change of
pace, assign students a podcast to listen to for homework. Then have
them do whatever listening exercises you choose.
• Most students will be able to access podcasts without any trouble, but
you might want to make sure podcast access will be smooth before
assigning it for homework. Either that or let students download a
particular podcast to a flash dive in class before heading out the door.
Online Games:
Playing and Designing Games for Language Development
• Stanford discussion say using games as an educational tool provides opportunities for
deeper learning
• Gaming provides an excellent alternative to traditional learning activities. Learners
can engage in various subject material in a fun and competitive way.
• Games support collaboration, problem-solving, decision-making and increase
motivation and engagement
