Internationalization of higher education (nep 2020) by Bizemag Advisors (Formerly L'strategyq)
The document discusses the internationalization and globalization of higher education, emphasizing the multidimensional nature of this process that varies by host country culture and economy. It highlights the attraction of foreign students as a key aspect of this globalization, explores student and faculty exchange opportunities, and underlines the importance of international research experiences and partnerships. Additionally, it calls for reforms in curriculum delivery and blended learning to align with global standards.
It is amultidimensional

Depending upon the host country’s culture, social
and economic values, it can be done in many ways

Attract Foreign studentsto our
Higher education Institiutes – latest
addition in New education Policy
If we take a review of last 40 years in western world, Commercialization of HE
in terms of recruitment of foreign students is one and most popular aspect of
globalization in HE. However there are many disturbing facts in which these
universities operate. If we look back at history, British universities were known
as leaders in providing low cost education to foreign students.
It is said that as Margret Thatcher took over a low British economy era in
1979, her secretary of state for education came to know that there is going to
be 100 million cut for University budgets and was suggested by then civil
servant at treasury, that you simply make overseas students pay full fees costs
and stop subsidizing the tuition fees, and even small universities were sitting
in overseas markets recruiting students in order to get funds.

Economy andSocial culture
in terms of incoming
foreign currency
This also helps in
• funding of host Institute,
• it boosts tourism, and
• exposure of our higher education qualities to other nations as
well,
• attracting foreign students and faculties to come and explore more
opportunities

Student/Faculty Exchange –
Anotherpopular way catching up
over last decade
Indian Universities are developing partnerships with International Universities
to send a group of their students on an educational trip. This gives a short
term exposure to their college campus, infrastructure, professors, tutorials,
assessment modes and local city tours, sometimes also including trip to an
industrial plant or corporate office. This is a great mode of globalization.
Developing similar trips from foreign Universities as a Faculty exchange is
another big way to internationalize Higher education. Keeping one module to
be taught by International faculty is great way to get students accustomed to a
foreign pedagogy. Online learning with blended mode and an active live
tutorial is great way of globalizing yet keeping costs minimum by saving on
travel and living costs of external faculty. I had first taste of a foreign professor
teaching in 2001, during my visit to Abdus Salam ICTP, Italy. The zeal from
being a follower of curriculum to creator of new wave had been sown there.
I knew , that this would need time and efforts beyond my regular job to realize
this dream some day even in miniscule, and I started looking for more and
more information on how to achieve this for my college students.

Making International research
experienceas a part of higher
studies
Globalization or Internationalization has always been
there in research, Science and Maths. As you go to
Rutherford’s discovery of atom, or Max planck’s theory,
they both had contacts with all researchers and
scientists from all over the world. He would talk with
everyone and everyone around would talk to him and
among these global interactions, are created
innovations, discoveries and taken notice of.

Making International research
experienceas a part of higher
studies
Partnerships between Indian and International
Universities to make half an year lab facilities available
to the research scholars is another way to get
knowledge about research methods, way of thinking
and getting into pool of International think tanks .
Mutual fellowship awards and scholarships make a part
of such exchanges and DST , UGC do have some
schemes on these lines.
Job openings of post doctoral research fellowships,
research assistants are then easily manageable by both
nations

My contribution ina small way
When I completed Ph.D, I used to sit through long hours in IIT
Delhi library to read through latest journals. In those times
there was no emails or internet. It took at least 6 months to
get my paper published after being posted. We had to wait for
months together to know what is being already achieced
seven seas across.
In 2008, I was introduced to this professional network by my
husband, initially I was baffled with only corporate profiles on
it, there was none from Delhi university to start with and then
slowly I started sending connecting request to scientists from
USA. Soon in 2008, I founded a linkedin superspecialised
group on Semiconductor device modeling and simulation with
10 of my connections. Today with more than 4200 members
ranging from Founders, Vice Presidents, to research scientists and
enrolled Ph.D students from companies like intel, Qualcomm, Global
foundry and several leading Universities from World , the group is
actively engaged among its members serving the purpose of
immediate knowledge transfer, quick access to openings in post-
doctoral positions, research fellowships, conferences and guidance
among members.

Reforms Required instructured way
Delivery standards
Quality –
a) parity of curriculum at par with
International standards,
b) Parity in credit system at par with home
country to start with & International
systems
c) Different timings of sessions as compared
to other parts of the world
Mode of delivery
Blended Learning –
In order to be at par with International Higher
education systems, blended learning is to be
nurtured heavily as mandatory part of
Institutes.
Online tutorials + assessments + support
services = Success
For example in crisis times foreign students
moving back to their homes should be able to
continue classes, exams
