What is a Network?
A computer network is an interconnection
of a group of computers.
How did the Internet developed?
 The internet first came about in February 1958 in America
 A man named JCR Licklider saw universal networking as a
potential unifying revolution.
 He envisioned a globally interconnected set of computers
through which everyone could quickly access data and
programs from any site.
 The internet began to grow rapidly in the 1970’s as the
knowledge of networking was growing more and more rapidly.
 It expanded further in the 1980’s as the general public were beco
ming more aware of it.
 The general public gained access to the Internet on July
16, 1986 when the first Freenet came on-line in Cleveland in
the U.S.
 Between 1987 and 1988 the number of hosts increased from
10,000 to 60,000
 With the development of the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1991, th
ere was no stopping the rapid expansion of the Internet.
 People only had to download a WWW browser in order to
access the info on millions of websites. Countries around the
world joined the Internet and registered their two-letter domain na
mes, e.g. pk for Pakistan.
 The most important development was in 1993 was the release
of the first graphic web browser software, Mosaic.
 In 1998, the Internet continued to grow, with thousands of new su
bscribers every day joining the millions already subscribed.

 Telnet service enables users to login to another computer on inte
rnet from their local computer for using:
 Computing power of remote computer
 Software on remote computer
 Database of remote computer
 This action is called ‘remote login’.
Usenet News
 Usenet news service enables a group of internet users to exchange
their views, ideas, information on some common topic of internet.
 A newsgroup is like a large notice board accessible to all members
belonging to the group.
 2 types of newsgroups:
 Moderated
 Non-moderated
The World Wide Web
 It is a most popular method of accessing internet.
 It uses a concept called hypertext.
 Hypertext documents on internet are known as web pages.
 Web pages are created by using a special language called
Hyper Text Markup Language (html)
Social Networking
 Now a days, Social networking system is very
common.
 These network help in sharing knowledge discussion
on a specific topic, problems and their solutions.

Checking emails
 It is reported that the first thing that 90 % of Internet users do
when they connected to the net is to check if they have received
any emails.
 Internet has drastically changed the mail pattern and has made it

download music and movies.
 Apart from it, there are lots of other things that can be
downloaded using internet as well.
