INTRODUCTION TO
LIBRARYSCIENCE
& MANAGEMENT

Learning Objectives
 To gain knowledge about the library and its functions.
 To know the information needs of the society.
 To understand the different types of libraries and its role &
responsibilities.
 To know the concepts of Digital Library and Virtual
library.
 To understand cataloguing & Classification.. etc.
Introduction
The word "Library" means "a collection of books for study,
research, reference and recreation". It is derived from a
Latin word 'liber' which means 'a book'.
The definition of library has changed functions over a period
of time with the change in its. Let us see some of the
definitions provided by different reference sources and the
scholars of Library and Information Science.
Introduction
The Oxford Companion to the English Language says that
the "library is a collection of books, periodicals
and/or other materials, primarily written and
printed".
Purpose of the library
Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, father of Library Science in India
who designates the library as a public institution.
Being a public institution, it has the responsibily to serve the
public without any reservation or biasness. It can serve the
society for a longer period.
Library and its Functions
Two categories
 Preservation of intellectual heritage of the society in the
form of literary works (information sources).
 Access to literary works to the society.
Library and its Functions
 Collect, maintain and make the information resources
available for the public access.
 Promote and dissemination of information to englightened
citizenship and enrich their personal life.
 Provide opportunity for life-long learning, etc.
Modern Society & Library
Three different phases
I. Agrarian Society (Agriculture, fishing, mining, etc.)
II. Industrial Society (Invention of machines, and
equipments)
III. Information Society (Research & Development)
information became the center of economy.
Information & Library
 Michael Polayani has given two categorized of
knowledge…
1. Tacit Knowledge – knowledge of an individual which
may or may not be expressed or shared.
2. Explicit Knowledge – knowledge which is expressed to
others orally, in a recorded form or through other
communication medium.

Digital Library – information resources in
electronic forms. More popular in 1990s.
Collection of digital objects, including text,
image, video and audio.
Virtual Library – library without walls.

Classification & Cataloguing
The word “Classification” comes form the Latin
word “Classis”. Seperating as well as grouping
process.

(DDC) formed in 1873 by late
Melvil Dewey.
Classification & Cataloguing
Colon Classification (CC) was
developed in 1933 by
Dr.S.R.Ranganathan.
Classification & Cataloguing
Catalogue was derived from the Greek phrase,
“katalogos”. Kata means “according to” and
logos means “order” or reason.
