What is SOCIAL NETWORKING?
Social Networking refers to grouping of individuals
and organizations together via some medium,
in order to share thoughts, interests, and activities.
Social network defined
• Social networks are computer networks, linking people,
organization, and knowledge.
• A social network website allows users to:
1. Create a “profile”: setup an account to create a digital
representation of themselves
2. Select other members of the site as contacts or
connections
3. Communicate and engage with these users
• creates a social graph
Social graph defined
The information a social network collects
about a user includes
• contact information
• location, associations
• personal information
• work history
• personal preferences, who you’re friends
with, etc.
What are social networks used
for?
What do you do with your social networking
profile?

The Popularity Begins
• Social networking was born one fine day in
1971, when the email was sent.
• The two computers were sitting right next to
each other.
• The message said "qwertyuiop”.
• Day by day people invented many sites
and its popularity began.
The most popular social media sites:
 Facebook
 Twitter
 LinkedIn
 Pinterest
 Google+
 Instagram
 Snapchat
 Facebook is a social networking service launched
in February 4, 2004.
 It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his
college roommates and fellow Harvard University
student Eduardo Saverin.
 Total Users :1.59 billion (Approx)
 Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack
Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah
Glass by July 2006 the site was launched.
 Total Users :974 million (Approx)
 LinkedIn is a social networking site designed
specifically for the business community.
 The goal of the site is to allow registered members to
establish and document networks of people they
know and trust professionally.
 Reid Hoffman is the founder of LinkedIn
 Total Users :414 million (Approx)
 In 2010, Systrom co-founded Instagram with Mike
Krieger in San Francisco, California.
 Total Users : 800 Million (Approx)
WHY SOCIAL NETWORKING IS
SO POPULAR IN THESE DAYS?
 Easy to access
 Opportunity to meet new
peoples
 Free to use
 Social networking sites are
user friendly
WHERE SOCIAL
NETWORKING HELPS
 Online Marketing
 Online Jobs

 Share Pictures, Audio, Video
Advantages
of Social Networking Sites
 Connecting the World
 Get to Know What Happens Around the world

Disadvantages Of Social
Networking Sites
 Spreads False And Unreliable
Information
 Causing Major Relationship Problems
 Cyber Bullying Is A Growing Problem
 Used To Profile and Discriminate people
 The Addiction Is Real
Six Degrees of Separation
Six degrees of separation Theory
 In 1929, Hungarian author Frigyes Karinthy in one of his
short stories titled Chains, said that
 “With growing communication and travel, the friendship
network would grow irrespective of the distance between
two humans.”
 “The social distance would shrink immensely.”
 “All the people on the planet could be connected to one
another by 5 or fewer people.”
 This theory captivated millions of mathematicians,
sociologists, and physicists and also laid the founding
stone of the first online social network.
 Soon, several “small world” projects were conducted.
Small world phenomenon
• The first significant empirical study of the small-world
phenomenon was undertaken by the social psychologist
Stanley Milgram.
• He chose random people & told them to Forward a letter
only to people they know on a first-name basis.
• He provided the target’s name, address, occupation, and
some personal information, but insisted that the
participants could not mail the letter directly to the target.

Present Scenario
• In 2011, Facebook and researchers computed that, the
average separation across 721 million people using
Facebook was only 3.74.
• In their research published in February 2016, this number
dropped down to 3.57, with more than 1.59 billion people
active on Facebook.
• On average, Facebook users are connected by 2.9 to 4.2
degrees of separation.
• Facebook mentions that this estimation was done using
the Flajolet–Martin algorithm.
• With a growing social network, the average separation
and connection would soon reduce to possibly 2 to 3
degrees of separation.
Social Network for IoT
• M2M (Machine - to - Machine) communication.
• The social aspect of a machine is its ability to form a
network with other machines.
• It includes information such as the machine's functional
details and related neighbourhood details.
• This allows other devices to offer their services to the
mentioned device based on the needs (requirements), as
well as offering services, data, and sensors.
