IoT Methodology - Welcome slides for #iotday IoT Ghent Meetup 090418
❖ What is IOTM?
❖ Solutions + “project routes” we’re working on
❖ Past projects
❖ Give some new perspectives
❖ Get some feedback
Hello
IoT is not “business as usual”
Scope is bigger, much bigger
More personalities need to collaborate
Even more unknown unknowns for the
traditional business
THE IOT DILEMMA
Reaction from organisations
Unclear definition = no
strategy
No direction
“Business as usual” habits
THE IOT DILEMMA
Current IoT solutions
Micro/macro phenomena
Understanding sector needs
For ‘Industry/tech leaders’ it’s
business as usual
Why is this occurring?
IoT competence domains
are unknown
A one size fits all approach
is impossible
So where do we start?
IOTM is a three phase iterative method to
brainstorm, build and tune sensor,
smart device and data driven challenges.
It maps out new projects, helps with
existing initiatives or generating ideas
from scratch.
WELCOME TO IOTM
The lifecycle journey takes nine steps:
● Co-creation, ideation and validation
● Architecture, implementation and deployment
● Identify, classify and act
IOTM LIFECYCLE
Diversity at each step ensures the correct
feedback from end users, analysts,
designers, developer and marketers, getting
everyone on the same page.
The challenge for any generic, ‘horizontal’,
swiss-army-knife like solution is to match
the right tools, with the right people at the
right time.
We use a company ‘competence’
assessment to identify the strengths,
weaknesses, experiences and resources a
company might already have at hand.
IOT COMPETENCE MODEL
Successful IoT initiatives align with
similar traits, driven by strengths,
weaknesses and the partnerships an
organisation builds, it can make all the
difference in delivering change
successfully.

IoT Methodology IoT Competence

IOTM Toolbox
Blueprint initiatives to solve common
challenges getting started or progressing
further with IoT
• Project analysis workshop
• Real-time data dashboards
• Remote Sensor Pilot projects
• Creating new products - business contracts
• Hands-on IoT hardware
• UX for developing IoT user interfaces
PROJECT ROUTES
TELECOM IOT WORKSHOP
Tools used:
● Context maps
● System maps
● Pitch deck
● Public voting system
brainstorm build tune
Through public hackathons, internal
workshops and various projects - a number
of ‘co-creation’ tools were used to explore
new ideas and inspire new strategy.
Problem(s): There’s no next step, or
convincing buy-in from operations.
BARCODE STOCK CONTROL
INTEGRATION
Tools used:
● Business case assessment
● Shop floor - System maps
● Network diagrams
● Test plans for accountability
handover
● Documentation
brainstorm build tune
A metal pressing firm required a more
effective way to manage stock. Using a
handheld barcode scanner we improved
accountability for both goods in/out.
Problem(s): Pushing this into quality control
was too ambitious
PLEQ - Industrial Vibration Sensors
PLEQ provides vibration analysis solution for
manufacturers and maintenance firms.
Using a ‘plug and play’ sensor for early
alerting and real-time monitoring.
Problem(s): Mountains of data, endless
alarms and constantly data modelling efforts
Tools used:
● System maps
● Test case
● App feedback reports
● Root-cause analysis
brainstorm build tune

IOTM is essentially a scaffold for existing
businesses, to explore and discover IoT
opportunities enhancing, extending and
supporting products and services.
IOTM is built by C4IOT who provides Consultancy for the
Internet of Things in software development, hardware
deployment and overall management of a variety of IoT
projects.
APPROACH USING IOTM
The steps and
solutions offered by
IOTM are seeds to
grow initiatives that
companies and even
ecosystems lead.
Ideation Management and Voting
system for Hackathon event
PAST PROJECTS
Independent evaluator
Coach/Judge at IoT Roadshow
showcasing Intel technologie
Supported Telco IoT workshops and
managed developers community
Developed IoT Ideation web app
for nationwide IoT competition
C4IOT is looking for project sponsors and
commercial/research partners to explore the
methodology with a larger sample of projects aligned
under one initiative.
Our next hypothesis concerns the value and alignment
of goals across a single enterprise or towards multiple
companies in an ecosystem using IOTM.
