Dear David,
As we are approaching an end to the restrictions associated with COVID-19, it seems a good time to reflect on the
disruptions and focus on how technology might be applied to avoid the same situation happening again. It is almost
inevitable, in my opinion, that our pre-COVID lifestyles and travel/mobility will almost certainly lead to future pandemics
and whilst the lessons learnt in fast-tracking clinical research and development of new drugs and vaccines will help to
mitigate the situation, it does not alter the pressing need to shift focus from cure to prevention.
Digital Health and Digital Therapeutics technologies can help to protect the future sustainability of public health services
through personal physical and mental health management whilst Digital Medicine will enable early detection of clinical
problems and a range of innovative new solutions for cures.
This month’s E-Newsletter includes details of previous and upcoming events where the focus has been on addressing some
of the challenges of preventative healthcare, especially in the area of the Ageing Society. Links to archived presentations
and future events are included and we hope you will enjoy the past presentations and register for some of the upcoming
events.
Digital Therapeutics and Immersive Technologies
Keynote Presentation at Bournemouth University Faculty of Health and Social Sciences
At the end of January, I was honoured to be invited to make a keynote presentation at Bournemouth University’s brand new
Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. It was the first physical event I have been able to attend in over 2 years. The event
was a multi-disciplinary inter-faculty simulation research day and my presentation explored ways in which immersive
technologies and digital therapeutics might address the challenges we face in preventative healthcare and the ageing
society.
I took the opportunity to record most of my presentation in 360 degree video and publish it to YouTube where it can be
viewed on most devices, including virtual reality headsets. The YouTube link is at https://youtu.be/xENL8dY1Cdg.
The full Powerpoint presentation can also be downloaded from Slideshare at Digital therapeutics and immersive
technologies Bournemouth University (slideshare.net).
Digital Health, Nutrition and Healthy Ageing
Screenshot from Webinar Presentation at ARC-2022 Conference
On February 7th
, I made an online presentation at the 4th
International Webinar on Aging and Rejuvenation. As well as
sharing some of the digital therapeutics solutions for both physical and mental health of the ageing population, I looked at
how digital technologies can support diet and nutrition which, in terms of preventative healthcare, are as important as
physical exercise in tackling the clinical challenges arising from modern lifestyles and obesity.
This presentation shared what I described as 3 generations of diet and nutrition digital health smartphone applications.
Many people today are using wearable devices such as FitBit which are increasingly evolving into clinical grade devices from
their origins as fitness trackers, measuring physical activity.
The webinar presentation is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVEUq3QojVw as well as other
presentations from this webinar.
The next webinar in this series will be on May 9-10 with details in the nest ISDM E-Newsletter when available.
FitBit Muhdo Precision Life Proof of Concept
Example Mobile Nutrition Application Screens
(NB – Precision Life is a Proof of Concept Screenshot only)
The mobile applications associated with devices like FitBit also aim to help manage diet and nutrition but require users to
record what they eat. This is linked to a database of food products and items with associated nutritional values.
Although there is a very comprehensive database of food products and cooked items, it needs a considerable amount of
discipline and time to calculate the calories and nutritional values. Because of the time and effort involved and the limited
accuracy of the data and portion sizes, it can only act as a guide to help users to balance their calorie intake with daily
calorie burn. FitBit does also offer healthy menu suggestions and provides advice screens to support the user.
What I describe as second generation diet and nutrition apps add an important level of personalisation because they are
based on the user’s DNA. Muhdo is a solution originally developed for elite athletes and provides both personalised exercise
and diet recommendations based on epigenetics. To use Muhdo, you order a kit online with a tube into which you put a
sample of your sputum to send off to the labs for DNA analysis, which takes 2-3 weeks. You can then use the Muhdo app to
get personalised health and fitness advice which give you greater control over your health. Muhdo provides personalised
dietary advice based on your DNA
Existing as a proof of concept only at this stage, Precision Life have outlined plans for the next generation of diet and
nutrition which is not only based on DNA but also on an medication the user might be taking. This proof of concept also
extends to the shopping basket with recommendations for healthy swaps and a traffic light system using thumbs up or
down to guide the user to the best choices.
Tripp Digital Therapeutics Virtual Reality
Tripp Digital Therapeutics in Virtual Reality
Tripp is a metaverse application available for free on the Oculus store. It uses immersive virtual reality environments with
relaxing vistas and sounds coupled to a soothing narrative designed to help with mindfulness and meditation. This has
substantial potential for stress management. In future, applications like Tripp are likely to use biofeedback from wearable
devices.
The link to the Tripp video shot on an Oculus Quest 2 is on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Pv3rYQUhzhQ.

AI and Personal Development IORMA Webinar
IORMA Webinar Thursday Feb 24th
at 14:00
The pandemic, the lockdowns and working from home have changed how individuals and societies think and act. As a result,
personal development has become more important, for one’s career, cognitive health or just pleasure!
Every person has a different style of how he or she learns and processes new information. Learning is likely to be more
effective if these preferences are taken into account. Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows learning to be personalised by
adapting to the needs of each learner, whether it be by the means of encouragement, the speed or the media used.
Experts who design the learning platforms will discuss the benefits that AI poses for personal development, and the
challenges ahead with those who train and educate.

According to McKinsey, healthcare providers around the world are facing several urgent imperatives: to strengthen clinical
quality; increase the delivery of personalised, patient-centred care; improve the patient experience; and enhance their
efficiency and productivity.
As a consequence, providers are introducing innovations in care delivery—often to achieve multiple aims. These innovations
include adopting lean and standardised processes to improve quality and optimise productivity, increasing the use of
automation and nonmedical staff members to change how their clinical workforce is deployed, employing new technologies
to deliver better-quality care at lower cost, involving patients more closely in care delivery, and harnessing patient-
generated data to personalise treatments.
Our panel members are part of the revolution transforming hospital treatment, register to join the discussion.

It is almost inevitable, in my opinion, that our pre-COVID lifestyles and travel/mobility will almost certainly lead to future pandemics and whilst the lessons learnt in fast-tracking clinical research and development of new drugs and vaccines will help to mitigate the situation, it does not alter the pressing need to shift focus from cure to prevention. Digital Health and Digital Therapeutics technologies can help to protect the future sustainability of public health services through personal physical and mental health management whilst Digital Medicine will enable early detection of clinical problems and a range of innovative new solutions for cures. This month’s E-Newsletter includes details of previous and upcoming events where the focus has been on addressing some of the challenges of preventative healthcare, especially in the area of the Ageing Society. Links to archived presentations and future events are included and we hope you will enjoy the past presentations and register for some of the upcoming events. • 2. Keynote Presentation at Bournemouth University Faculty of Health and Social Sciences At the end of January, I was honoured to be invited to make a keynote presentation at Bournemouth University’s brand new Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. It was the first physical event I have been able to attend in over 2 years. The event was a multi-disciplinary inter-faculty simulation research day and my presentation explored ways in which immersive technologies and digital therapeutics might address the challenges we face in preventative healthcare and the ageing society. I took the opportunity to record most of my presentation in 360 degree video and publish it to YouTube where it can be viewed on most devices, including virtual reality headsets. The YouTube link is at https://youtu.be/xENL8dY1Cdg. The full Powerpoint presentation can also be downloaded from Slideshare at Digital therapeutics and immersive technologies Bournemouth University (slideshare.net). Digital Health, Nutrition and Healthy Ageing Screenshot from Webinar Presentation at ARC-2022 Conference On February 7th , I made an online presentation at the 4th International Webinar on Aging and Rejuvenation. As well as sharing some of the digital therapeutics solutions for both physical and mental health of the ageing population, I looked at how digital technologies can support diet and nutrition which, in terms of preventative healthcare, are as important as physical exercise in tackling the clinical challenges arising from modern lifestyles and obesity. This presentation shared what I described as 3 generations of diet and nutrition digital health smartphone applications. Many people today are using wearable devices such as FitBit which are increasingly evolving into clinical grade devices from their origins as fitness trackers, measuring physical activity. FitBit Muhdo Precision Life Proof of Concept Example Mobile Nutrition Application Screens (NB – Precision Life is a Proof of Concept Screenshot only) The mobile applications associated with devices like FitBit also aim to help manage diet and nutrition but require users to record what they eat. This is linked to a database of food products and items with associated nutritional values. Although there is a very comprehensive database of food products and cooked items, it needs a considerable amount of discipline and time to calculate the calories and nutritional values. Because of the time and effort involved and the limited accuracy of the data and portion sizes, it can only act as a guide to help users to balance their calorie intake with daily calorie burn. FitBit does also offer healthy menu suggestions and provides advice screens to support the user. What I describe as second generation diet and nutrition apps add an important level of personalisation because they are based on the user’s DNA. Muhdo is a solution originally developed for elite athletes and provides both personalised exercise and diet recommendations based on epigenetics. To use Muhdo, you order a kit online with a tube into which you put a sample of your sputum to send off to the labs for DNA analysis, which takes 2-3 weeks. You can then use the Muhdo app to get personalised health and fitness advice which give you greater control over your health. Muhdo provides personalised dietary advice based on your DNA Existing as a proof of concept only at this stage, Precision Life have outlined plans for the next generation of diet and nutrition which is not only based on DNA but also on an medication the user might be taking. This proof of concept also extends to the shopping basket with recommendations for healthy swaps and a traffic light system using thumbs up or down to guide the user to the best choices.
