Lecture # 7
Objective of Lecture
 Website types
 Browsers
 Search Engines
 Hands on Internet surfing
 Ethical Issues on internet
Website types
 Originally, websites were purely informational. Before the
web was opened to the public, educational and research
institutions and government agencies were able to make
information available to each other via text-only websites.
 Now that we have the World Wide Web, there are more
types of websites than you can shake a stick at.
 Basic Website Types
1. Personal website 6. Informational websites
2. Photo sharing website 7. Online Business catalog
3. Writer / Authors websites 8. E-commerce websites
4. Community sharing websites
5. Mobile Device Websites
Website types
 Personal website : Your Internet Service Provider may offer you
free server space for you to create your own website that might
include some family photos and an online diary. Usually these will
have a web address (URL) looking something like this: www.your-
isp.com/~your-user-name/.
 Photo Sharing Websites : These types of website are now being
used for photo sharing. There are web companies
like, Flickr.com,Photosite.com, and Google's Picasa. There could
easily be over a hundred such sites that offer free photo sharing
paid for by their online advertising.
 Writers / Authors Websites : A writers website would include a
biography, a catalog of published books and works, perhaps
excerpts from some works, links to publications on sites like
Amazon.com, a link to the writer's blog, reviews and comments on
the author's publications.
Website types
 Community Building Websites :These websites build online
communities of people who want to interact with other people
socially or meet people who share their interests. The best
known website of this type is probably FaceBook.com. There is
also Linkedin.com. For sharing and discussing mutual interests,
there are online forums for practically any subject you can think
of.
 Mobile Device Websites:the use of mobile devices (cellphones,
PDAs, iPods, iPhones, etc) will become much more widespread
and prevelent. One problem is that standard websites are difficult
to view and take a long time to download. A new domain
designation has been created to identify websites that are
"mobile friendly". That is .mobi, as in www.xislegraphix.mobi
Website types
 Informational Websites: A major informational site is wikipedia.org,
the online encyclopedia. And it is unique, because it allows visitors
to contribute and edit articles.
 Online Business Catalog Websites: In the days before the
Internet, we used the print, radio, and television media to spread the
word about our businesses. Now we can cast a large net, reaching
literally millions of people with just one website. With your online
brochure or catalog, you can show anyone who looks for and finds
your website.
 Ecommerce Websites: There are millions of small businesses who
use their ecommerce websites to sell their products over the
Internet. E.g olx,com
Browsers
 A web browser is an interface that helps a computer user gain access to
all the content that is on the Internet .
 It can view images, text documents, audio and video files, games, etc.
 More than one web browser can also be installed on a single computer.
 When the browser is used for browsing web pages, the pages may contain
certain links which can be opened in a new browser. Multiple tabs and
windows of the same browser can also be opened.
 There are some leading web browsers.
 Internet Explorer
 Firefox
 Google Chrome
 Safari
 Opera
Search Engine
 Search engines are programs that search
documents for specified keywords and returns a list
of the documents where the keywords were found.
 A search engine is really a general class of
programs, however, the term is often used to
specifically describe systems like
 Google
 Bing
 Yahoo! Search
Ethical Issues on internet
 As internet Supply information whenever required.
 It is also a way to convey thoughts
 It is also used for Sharing knowledge and information.
 But Beware it has the potential to harm.
 Doing illegal, immoral activities.
Security Concerns in internet
 Not while data transfer over public / private media
only, but while storage also
 Availability
 Confidentiality and Privacy
 Integrity
.
Ethics and internet
 "Ethics has to do with what my feelings tell me is right or
wrong.“
 The technological configuration underlying the Internet
has a considerable bearing on its ethical aspects:
 People have tended to use it according to the way it was
designed, and to design it to suit that kind of use
 Internet is not value free zone. Have sensitivity to social
culture
Topics in Computer Ethics
 No matter which re-definition of computer ethics one
chooses, the best way to understand the nature of the
field is through some representative examples of the
issues and problems that have attracted research and
scholarship. Consider, for example, the following topics:
 Computers in the Workplace
 Computer Crime
 Privacy and Anonymity
 Intellectual Property
 Professional Responsibility
 Globalization
Classes of ethical problems
 Personal Intrusion
 Privacy
 Morality
 Deception
 Security
 Access
 Intellectual Property
 Ownership and control
 Technology and social responsibility
Examples of internet ethics
 Scenario 1:
Preeti has walked away from a lab computer without
logging off. Hemant sits down and, still logged in as
Preeti, sends inflammatory e-mail messages out to a
number of students and posts similar messages on the
class newsgroup.
 Scenario 2:
Tina's e-mail is being diverted and sent out to her entire
class. The messages are quite personal and Tina is
very embarrassed
Contd…
 Scenario 3:
Maria figures out that when she is logged into the server
she can look at others' directories, make copies of
files, and deposit new files. The operating system was
designed to allow this functionality so that people could
share their work. Mr. Kulkarni objects when he observes
Maria poking around in another student's directory. But
Maria responds by saying, "If the system allows me to do
it and there's no specific rule against it, what's the
problem?"
