Four advances in tech last year that were
largely swept under the carpet. Here's how
these combined, can work for you.
We hear a lot about technology and the future, and I find it exciting. I have decided to focus
on #PositiveTech, technology that will make our lives better, safer and more
interesting. This is my go at countering all the negative news we hear everyday. If I can
inspire one mind, by seeing that the future is going to be great then I’ll be happy.
Four amazing breakthroughs in technology have recently happened. Some made headlines,
other’s sort of drifted past.
1. Driverless Cars – Very early days, and a constant topic when discussing the
future.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-driving_car)
2. Artificial Intelligence – Still early days, well publicised. Lots of hype on what AI will
do, will maybe do. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_intelligence)
3. 5G – Very early days but quite a bit of news was released around this technology.
4. Quantum Computing – Very early days, Google’s breakthrough in this technology
was reported in the tech press but passed the majority of society without much
celebration. This breakthrough has been ranked equal, maybe even higher, than
putting a man on the moon. (https://www.sciencenews.org/article/google-quantum-
supremacy-claim-controversy-top-science-stories-2019-yir)
So, what happens when we bring these technologies together? I'll get to that shortly...
Lets think about a few questions designed to blow your mind - to challenge your ethics – it's
interesting so hang in there.
The Tram/Trolley Test – My version
You are on a Tram/Trolley and the brakes fail. You grab the controls, and look ahead. There
is a fork in the tracks.
Scenario one: To the left are 10 people talking, unaware of the approaching doom. To the
right is 1 person, also unaware – deep into Instagram. If you do nothing, you will turn left
and kill 10 people. If you pull the control lever you will turn right and only kill 1 person.
What would you do? Left or right?
Scenario two: To the left is 1 little child playing, unaware of the approaching doom. To the
right is an elderly couple, helping each other across the tracks, unaware of your approach.
What would you do? Left or right?
Scenario three: To the left are your children, laughing and playing. As you approach they
look directly at you – fear in their eyes – frozen. To the right are 10 school children,
laughing, playing, unaware of your approach.
What would you do? Left or right?
These are nasty scenarios and I sincerely hope you never have to make this decision. The
question is how would we teach AI to make this decision? Who teaches AI to make this
decision? What do we teach AI? Can we teach AI ethics?
This is a scenario regularly applied to driverless cars.
The twist...
… but what if we didn’t have to teach AI simulated ethics or the deeply horrendous decision
matrix of how to prioritise a human life?
So how will the technology above be involved in this?
The driverless cars are predicted to track, measure and collect up to 4 gigabytes of data a
day. This data can be used to continually train its AI algorithms. The real power will come
from every car sharing its 4 gigabytes a data as a collective learning. 4 Gig is a lot of data for
wireless networks to share. Then 4GB x a number of cars is even more data to share. Our
current 4G networks cant handle this volume of data at the speed required.
Enter 5G. 5G has the possibility to enable this data sharing, in real time, from car to car to
centralised computing. 1ms latency and high speed transmission is going to enable data
sharing like we have never seen before.
Enter quantum computing. This amount of data is going to take a massive amount of
computing power to analyse, and train and update AI models.
Putting it all together and we could end up with a 5G powered super network of driverless
cars, that monitor everything around them and share it with other cars that need it. This
data would feed into a collective knowledge of artificial intelligence or perhaps its next
generation, artificial super intelligence - powered by Quantum computing.
If we are lucky, we will never have to make the ethical decision posed in the scenarios
above. If we are lucky our driverless cars will collaborate to avoid this situation all together.
According to the Association For Safe International Road Travel nearly 1.25 million people
die, and 20-50 million people are injured each year in road accidents. If driverless cars, AI,
5G and quantum computing can help reduce this, we will be living in a better world.
I find it amazing, that these powerful technologies are in their infancy. To us old enough to
remember, this tech is at the equivalent growth cycle position as the Commodore 64 days of
the 1980. This technology will mature faster than we have previously seen. Google’s
Quantum computer was broken when it was tested and, the results stunned the tech world
(created some controversy too!), it is at the beginning of its growth/hype cycle and it
reportedly changed the world of computing power. 5G is only just launching and rolling
out. Mass AI is just beginning. Driverless cars are in their infancy but it is all maturing fast –
where will all this take us?
Will Australia play a role in this growth? What part will we play? You all know that
leadership is my passion – so what leaders will take us there?
Remember to share your #PositiveTech stories with me!
Love tech, have a great day.
