Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist known for her romantic fiction set among the landed gentry. Her realistic works and social commentary have earned her an important place in English literature. She spent the last eight years of her life in Chawton, Hampshire, where she did much of her writing. Many films have been adapted from her famous novels, which still impress readers and viewers today.
