Java was originally developed by Sun Microsystems in 1991 as a general-purpose, object-oriented programming language called Oak, which was renamed to Java in 1995. Over the following years, Sun released several updated versions of the Java Development Kit that enhanced the Java programming language and platform, with major releases in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2004.

- 1. Java is a general-purpose , object-oriented programming language developed by sun Microsystems in 1991. Originally called Oak by James Gosling. In 1995 Oak was renamed “Java” . In 1996 Sun release Java Development Kit 1.0 In 1997 Sun release the Java Development Kit 1.1(JDK 1.1) In 1998 Sun release the Java2 with version of the software Development Kit (SDK 1.2) In 1999 Sun release Java 2 Platform , Standard Edition (J2SE) and Enterprise Edition (J2EE). In 2000 J2SE with SDK 1.3 was released. In 2002 J2SE with SDK 1.4 was released. In 2004 J2SE with JDK 5.0 was released. This is known as J2SE 5.0.
