TUMOURS OF THE KIDNEY
INTRODUCTION
• Both benign and Malignant tumours occur in the
kidney the latter being more common .
• These may arise from renal tubules (Adenoma,
adenocarcinoma).
• Embryonic tissue (mesoblastic nephroma, Wilm’s
tumour).
• Mesenchymal tissue (angiomyolipoma, medullary
interstinal tumour) & from the epithelium of the
renal pelvis (urothelial carcinoma).
• Beside thee tumours, the kidney may be the
site of the secondary tumours.
CLASSIFICATION OF THE KIDNEY
TUMOURS
• BENIGN
• MALIGNANT
BENIGN TUMOURS
• Benign renal tumours are usually small and
are often an incidental finding at autopsy or
nephrectomy.
BENIGN TUMOURS
• 1.Cortical Adenoma
• 2.oncocytoma
• Other benign Tumours
• 3.Angiomyolipoma
• 4.Mesoblastiic nephroma
• 5.Multicystic Nephroma
• 6.Medullary Interstitial cell tumour
• 7. Juxta glomerular tumour or reninoma
MALIGNAT TUMOURS
• The two most common primary malignant
tumors of the kidney are adenocarcinoma and
wilm’s tumour.
• A third malignant renal tumour is urothelial
carcinoma occuring more commonly in the
renal pelvis
MALIGNAT TUMOURS
• 1. Adenocarcinoma of the kidney
• Synonyms or other names ……………
• Renal cell carcinoma
• Hypernephroma‘
• Grawitz tumour
• 2. Transitional cell carcinoma
• 3.squamous cell carcinoma
