This document summarizes key characteristics and families of the suborder Heteroptera. Heteroptera have hemelytra - the forewings are thickened at the base and membranous at the tip. They have a rostrum on their head and hold their wings flat over their body. Some families include Pentatomidae (shield bugs), Coreidae (leaf-footed bugs), and Scutelleridae (jewel bugs), which have an enlarged scutellum that forms a shield over the abdomen. Several families contain economically important predatory species, such as Belostomatidae (giant water bugs), that can inflict painful bites.
