Lean Manufacturing
Definitions
• Lean Manufacturing: is a business model and
systematic approach of identifying and
eliminating waste during a manufacturing
process through continuous improvement.
• Lean emphasizes on elimination of non value
activities (waste) while delivering quality on
time at minimal cost with greater efficiency
• Value is any action/process/product that a
customer would be willing to pay for
• Waste (muda) is any activity that consumes
resources but does not add value to the design,
manufacturing, distribution and customer care
• Developed by the Toyota Executive Taiichi
Ohno (1912-90) during post-Second World
War reconstruction period in Japan
• The lean is a management philosophy derived
from the Toyota Production System(TPS)
• TPS is renowned for its focus on waste
reduction and this saw the growth of Toyota
from a small company to the world’s largest
automaker

what they want when they want it
• Lean is about providing quality
• Lean helps keep machines reliable
• Lean helps reduce costs
Attendees learn about lean manufacturing
tools which are proven methods to achieving
a lean state in a manufacturing process
