Leptin, a peptide hormone discovered in 1994, is secreted by adipocytes and plays a crucial role in regulating food intake as part of a feedback loop related to body fat depots. The defective ob/ob gene in mice has linked leptin to obesity, while the knockout of the db/db gene results in decreased leptin receptors, contributing to leptin resistance and obesity. Obesity is recognized as a global health problem, highlighting the significance of leptin in understanding and addressing this issue.
