Respiratory Tract Diseases
Asthma
What is Asthma ?
Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the
lungs. These airways or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in
and out of the lungs.
If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They
become even more swollen and the muscles around the
airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms.
This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs.
According to American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI)
Coughing
Shortness of breath
Chest tightness
Wheezing
Asthma Symptoms
Asthma Triggers
 Outdoor allergens- such as pollens from grass, trees and weeds
 Indoor allergens- such as pet dander, dust mites and mold
 Certain drugs and food additives
 Irritants in the air- such as smoke, chemical fumes and strong
odors
 Colds, the flu or other illnesses
 Exercise
 Stress
 Weather conditions- such as cold air or extremely dry, wet or
windy weather
• Exercise-induced asthma is triggered by exercise or
physical exertion.
Many people with asthma experience some degree of
symptoms with exercise. With exercise-induced
asthma, airway narrowing peaks 5 to 20 minutes
after exercise begins
Exercise-Induced Asthma
Aspirin-induced Asthma
 Taking aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs) triggers an asthma.
 Between 2% and 25% of adults with asthma are
sensitive to aspirin.
 Aspirin-induced asthma is more common in adults than
children.
 This type of asthma is usually severe.
This asthma type accounts for nearly 60 percent of all
asthma. It involves airway obstruction and typical
asthma symptoms often associated with allergies and
triggered by allergens. Examples of common triggers
include pollens, molds, dust mites and animal dander.
Allergic Asthma
Night time asthma, also called nocturnal asthma,
is a common type of the disease. If you have
asthma, the chances of having symptoms are
much higher during sleep because asthma is
powerfully influenced by the sleep-wake cycle
(circadian rhythms). Your asthma symptoms of
wheezing, cough, and trouble breathing are
common and dangerous, particularly at
nighttime.
Night time (Nocturnal) Asthma
Allergic Rhinitis?
An allergen  that  causes  an allergic  reaction.
Allergic rhinitis, is an allergic response to specific
allergens. Pollen is the most common allergen in
seasonal  allergic  rhinitis.  These  are  allergy
symptoms  that  occur  with  the  change  of
seasons.
What is Allergic Rhinitis?
Common symptoms of allergic rhinitis include:
•Sneezing
•A runny nose
•A stuffy nose
•An itchy nose
•Coughing
•A sore or scratchy throat
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis
In addition to tree pollen, other common allergens include:
•Grass pollen
•Dust mites
•Animal dander, which is old skin
•Cat saliva
•Mold
What causes Allergic Rhinitis
• Perennial rhinitis is characterized by the frequency of
symptoms – occurring for at least one hour on most
days throughout the year.
• The most common allergens that trigger symptoms
of perennial allergic rhinitis are dust mites and
animals – especially household pets like cats and
dogs.

Ans: The pathophysiology processes of asthma may also increase
the risk of other disease involving inflammatory processes, such as
cardiovascular disease (eg.) atherosclerosis by generating
inflammatory biomarker CRP (Carbon reactive protein), IL-6
(Interleukin 6), LDL-C (Low density lipoprotein C), triglyceride etc.
Asthma patients are
43% more likely to have heart disease than non-asthmatics.
36% more likely to have high blood pressure than non-asthmatics.
Montelukast Lowers the CVD risk of asthma patients.
So, Loctril is the suitable treatment option for cardiologist.
Why Montelukast can be the suitable option for Cardiologist?
• Effectively blocks Cystinyl Leukotriene receptor
• Significantly reduces Day and Night time Asthma
symptoms
• Effectively reduces Allergic rhinitis symptoms
• Better than Salmeterol in bronchodilation
Unique selling point
• Ensure adequate shelving of Loctril®
tablet in front of nearest
all chemist shops, clinics and institutions of the targeted
