The document discusses asthma, highlighting it as a chronic airway disease characterized by inflammation and difficulty in breathing, often triggered by various allergens and irritants. It introduces montelukast (Loctril), a medication that acts as a leukotriene receptor antagonist to alleviate asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms, along with dosage guidelines. The document also presents a market analysis of respiratory medications, emphasizing the importance of targeted marketing to healthcare professionals for the effective prescription of Loctril.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the
lungs. These airways or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in
and out of the lungs.
If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They
become even more swollen and the muscles around the
airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms.
This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs.
According to American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI)
Asthma Triggers
Outdoorallergens- such as pollens from grass, trees and weeds
Indoor allergens- such as pet dander, dust mites and mold
Certain drugs and food additives
Irritants in the air- such as smoke, chemical fumes and strong
odors
Colds, the flu or other illnesses
Exercise
Stress
Weather conditions- such as cold air or extremely dry, wet or
windy weather
7.
• Exercise-induced asthmais triggered by exercise or
physical exertion.
Many people with asthma experience some degree of
symptoms with exercise. With exercise-induced
asthma, airway narrowing peaks 5 to 20 minutes
after exercise begins
Exercise-Induced Asthma
8.
Aspirin-induced Asthma
Takingaspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs) triggers an asthma.
Between 2% and 25% of adults with asthma are
sensitive to aspirin.
Aspirin-induced asthma is more common in adults than
children.
This type of asthma is usually severe.
9.
This asthma typeaccounts for nearly 60 percent of all
asthma. It involves airway obstruction and typical
asthma symptoms often associated with allergies and
triggered by allergens. Examples of common triggers
include pollens, molds, dust mites and animal dander.
Allergic Asthma
10.
Night time asthma, also called nocturnal asthma,
is a common type of the disease. If you have
asthma, the chances of having symptoms are
much higher during sleep because asthma is
powerfully influenced by the sleep-wake cycle
(circadian rhythms). Your asthma symptoms of
wheezing, cough, and trouble breathing are
common and dangerous, particularly at
nighttime.
Night time (Nocturnal) Asthma
An allergen that causes an allergic reaction.
Allergic rhinitis, is an allergic response to specific
allergens. Pollen is the most common allergen in
seasonal allergic rhinitis. These are allergy
symptoms that occur with the change of
seasons.
What is Allergic Rhinitis?
Montelukast is aselective and orally active leukotriene
receptor antagonist that inhibits the Cysteinyl leukotriene
CysLT1 receptor. Each 10 mg film-coated Loctril tablet
contains 10.4 mg Montelukast sodium, which is
equivalent to 10 mg of Montelukast.

Therapeutic Class of Loctril Tablet
21.
Leukotrienes are anaturally occurring chemical substance
(Autacoids) that promotes an inflammatory response.
When produced and released in the body, this chemical causes
airway constriction, the tightening of muscles and excess mucus
and fluid.
What are Leukotrienes?
22.
When Leukotrienes areReleased?
If anyone breathe an asthma triggers, the body of asthmatics
person release Leukotrienes.

Ans: The pathophysiologyprocesses of asthma may also increase
the risk of other disease involving inflammatory processes, such as
cardiovascular disease (eg.) atherosclerosis by generating
inflammatory biomarker CRP (Carbon reactive protein), IL-6
(Interleukin 6), LDL-C (Low density lipoprotein C), triglyceride etc.
Asthma patients are
43% more likely to have heart disease than non-asthmatics.
36% more likely to have high blood pressure than non-asthmatics.
Montelukast Lowers the CVD risk of asthma patients.
So, Loctril is the suitable treatment option for cardiologist.
Why Montelukast can be the suitable option for Cardiologist?
