Khan Tervel was a Bulgarian ruler in the early 8th century who helped the Byzantine Empire on two occasions. According to local legend, his daughter fell from the Madara cliffs because of her forbidden love for an ordinary stonemason who carved the famous Madara Horseman relief. The horseman carving is believed to date back to Khan Tervel's time in the early 700s to commemorate one of his victories that saved the Byzantines.
