Student Travel Review

Authors Program
Mr. Bijo Kurian
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
'S DESK
At Witty International School, we believe that there
is no substitute for ‘education through action’ and
that exploring places, people, cultures, economic
opportunities,andtechnologicaladvancementsthrough
travel, complements and completes the educational
experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour
to create responsible global citizens and dynamic
leaders by bringing the knowledge of the world to the
classroom as well as encouraging students to go out
into the world. These two methods are critical to create
the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy,
understanding, and international collaboration.
In line with this mission, our students recently
journeyed to Malaysia. Our students visited several
locations in this beautiful Asian country. To augment
the broader program, we selected the Young Authors
Program, which ensured students’ engagement and
immersion. This Student Travel Review is an outcome
of this collaborative and exploratory module. It
captures the entire journey in students’ own words and
photographs. It even showcases their learning from
their active interaction with one of the world’s most
enigmatic nations.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra
Edventures, a company that is aware of co-curricular
and extra-curricular goals and developmental needs
of students. We acknowledge the contribution of
their staff, especially their on-journey educators.
Their professionalism made for an effortless, safe,
and enriching travel experience for our students and
teachers.
Lastly, we extend a heartfelt thanks to the students,
who participated in the program so enthusiastically.
Our willing learners had an enriching experience, the
enduring benefits of which they will reap all throughout
their academic lives and careers. Each parent may feel
proud of this highly demonstrable publication that will
keep reminding their wards of their achievements and
capabilities, lifelong.
Sincerely,
Mr. Bijo Kurian
Principal
Witty International School
An educational journey to foreign lands always
induces learning and excitement among young and
inquisitive students. When the destination is as diverse
as Southeast Asia, one can only imagine the myriad
ways in which Indian students would absorb and
construct learning out of the many differences and
similarities that mark the cultures and people of India
and Southeast Asia.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling
students to construct knowledge through a meaningful
encounter with new cultures, without diluting their fun
and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious
minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program
Development Team (PDT), which comprises both
Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully
designs culturally neutral projects that enable students
to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their
impressions. These tools are deployed through a
process that encourages teamwork and meaningful
discussions besides recording observations through
digital means, all of which is finally synthesised into a
media product that showcases the ideas and learning
of the students.

MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA
This Student Travel Review, ‘Malaysia’ is one such
media product that captures the journey of learning of
the students of Witty International School. This book
serves as a window into Malaysia, especially valuable
for those students, peers, and parents who could not be
a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and
creative capacities of the students, the credit for which
is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Witty
International School, for their efforts and support, which
made this journey possible. We would like to extend our
gratitude to the Principal, Mr. Bijo Kurian for guiding
us. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying
teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their
energy made our work easy, and more importantly,
made for a more memorable journey for the students.
We encourage you to read and relive the learning and
adventures of these students through the words and
photographs that follow.
Sincerely,
Amita Bajaj

OUR JOURNEY
Our visit to Batu Caves was another insightful
experience. We saw a huge statue of a Hindu deity.
Also, we learnt that Batu Caves are situated amidst
limestone hills, a unique geographical feature.
Apart from learning new Malay words, meeting
new people, and visiting different places, we
can confidently say that the memories of this
trip would be the closest to our hearts for many
decades to come.
Travelling is construed to be ephemeral when
one enjoys the tranquillity and resuscitation gets
a break from the mundane routine. Recently, we
visited Malaysia on a school trip. We were all
fortunate enough to explore all the major tourist
spots of that nation.
Firstly, we visited the Genting Highlands
through the Skyway. We were spellbound by the
overwhelming beauty of that place. The Marvellous
Mall encompassed many rides, shops, and theme
parks, which were fantastic. The lip-smacking
cuisines at the Genting Highlands were amazing.
We stayed at First World Hotel, which has its name
in the Guinness Book of World Records because
it has more than 7,000 rooms. The experience at
Snow Park was beyond words.
Next day, we went to Sunway Lagoon and the
water rides in the park were thrilling. We felt over
the moon while riding the water slides and other
exotic rides. In Kuala Lumpur, we went to the KL
Tower and other popular landmarks such as the
King’s Palace. Further, Kuala Lumpur is known for
another skyscraper — PETRONAS Twin Towers.

bring out the lifestyle of the Malays. With a multi-
ethnic population, tourists can observe a variety
of cultures. Malaysia has people from multiple
races and regions, and tourists find it easier to
visit Malaysia to get a glimpse of Asia as a whole.
Besides cultural diversity, Malaysia has several
attractive spots like Genting Highlands, the King’s
Palace, Batu Caves and several scenic islands to
attract tourists. Thus Malaysia serves as a great
destination for tourists to learn about diverse
Asian cultures.
Malaysia is the third richest Southeast Asia
country. Growth in tourism helps in creating job
opportunities and strengthens the local economy.
With focus on earning national revenue, increased
social stability and better services are offered
as the government takes initiatives to improve
infrastructure and services for enhancing tourism
in the country. Also, the Malay communities
operate with harmony and peace making it
easier for the country to work and create a bright
experience for the tourists who visit the country
throughout the year, from all across the world.
Malaysia is known to be one of the best places
for coastal tourism around the world. Langkawi
and Kedah are some favourite tourist hotspots.
Relishing authentic food in Malaysia is one of the
best travel experiences. Marked as a relatively
safe country, tourists will not face many problems.
Boasting that Malaysia is one of the most vibrant
economies in south-east Asia, the country has
witnessed noticeable industrial growth and
political stability over time. The reports suggest
that 25.9 million international tourists visited
Malaysia in the year 2017. This proves that if the
tourism sector is developed, Malaysia can achieve
a faster rate of development and improve its
infrastructure.
Given the circumstances, the government has
made tourism as one of the most pivotal factors
to earn revenue for the country. Tourism industry
has become a fuel to accelerate the country’s
economic growth. Further, it is the experience that
adds to the visit and not only the infrastructure of
the country. Traditional Malay villages provide for
an atypical trip.
In Kuala Lumpur, one can enjoy the skyscraper
views as well as the richness of paddy fields that

The cuisine of Malaysia reflects the multi-ethnic
culture of its population and is defined by its
diversity. There is strong influence from Malay,
Chinese, Indian, Thai, Javanese, and Sumatran
cuisines. Apam Balik and Nasi kerabu are some
famous food dishes. Beef, crab, and chicken are
favourite ingredients. The famous drinks are Teh
tarik and tea, both of which are quite similar.
Popular sports in Malaysia include badminton,
bowling, football, squash, and field hockey. Wau
is a traditional form of kite-flying. Sepak Takraw
is a game in which a rattan ball is kept in the air
without using hands. A traditional game played
during the rice harvest season is gasing in which
large tops (weighing around 5 kg) are thrown by
unfurling a rope and scooped off the ground while
spinning. At times, these tops are known to spin
for over an hour. Other sports are Dragon dancing
and Dragon boat racing. Further, Malaysia’s has
a long coastline, so a number of adventure water
sports like scuba diving and white water rafting
are also popular.
Malaysia is a multi–ethnic, multicultural, and
multilingual nation. Different ethnic groups in
Malaysia maintain separate cultural identities. The
society of Malaysia has been described as “Asia in
miniature”. Although the Constitution of Malaysia
says that all Malays are Muslims, the culture of
this country draws on the varied cultures of the
different people.
The first people to live in Malaysia were indigenous
tribes. Later, the Malays moved there from
mainland Asia in ancient times. When trade
began with China and India, there was increased
immigration. The Persians, Arabs, and the British
also influenced the Malay culture to a large extent.
In 2019, the population of Malaysia was estimated
to be 32.6 million. About 29.4 million are Malaysian
residents and about 3.2 million came from
outside the country. A majority of the Malaysian
population follows Islamic religion. Since most
of the population is Muslim, you will see women
wearing the tudung, a type of hijab. However,
many people also dress formally that include suits,
ties, shirts, and black-coloured slacks. The dress
that men traditionally wear is called Baju Melayu,

  • 3. Mr. Bijo Kurian FROM THE PRINCIPAL 'S DESK At Witty International School, we believe that there is no substitute for ‘education through action’ and that exploring places, people, cultures, economic opportunities, andtechnologicaladvancementsthrough travel, complements and completes the educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to create responsible global citizens and dynamic leaders by bringing the knowledge of the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world. These two methods are critical to create the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy, understanding, and international collaboration. In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to Malaysia. Our students visited several locations in this beautiful Asian country. To augment the broader program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’ engagement and immersion. This Student Travel Review is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module. It captures the entire journey in students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from their active interaction with one of the world’s most enigmatic nations. I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra Edventures, a company that is aware of co-curricular
  • 4. and extra-curricular goals and developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey educators. Their professionalism made for an effortless, safe, and enriching travel experience for our students and teachers. Lastly, we extend a heartfelt thanks to the students, who participated in the program so enthusiastically. Our willing learners had an enriching experience, the enduring benefits of which they will reap all throughout their academic lives and careers. Each parent may feel proud of this highly demonstrable publication that will keep reminding their wards of their achievements and capabilities, lifelong. Sincerely, Mr. Bijo Kurian Principal Witty International School
  • 5. An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement among young and inquisitive students. When the destination is as diverse as Southeast Asia, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students would absorb and construct learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and Southeast Asia. For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a meaningful encounter with new cultures, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program Development Team (PDT), which comprises both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that encourages teamwork and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through digital means, all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students. Amita Bajaj MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA
  • 6. This Student Travel Review, ‘Malaysia’ is one such media product that captures the journey of learning of the students of Witty International School. This book serves as a window into Malaysia, especially valuable for those students, peers, and parents who could not be a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, the credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school. EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Witty International School, for their efforts and support, which made this journey possible. We would like to extend our gratitude to the Principal, Mr. Bijo Kurian for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and more importantly, made for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage you to read and relive the learning and adventures of these students through the words and photographs that follow. Sincerely, Amita Bajaj Editor, Student Publications

Also, we learnt that Batu Caves are situated amidst limestone hills, a unique geographical feature. Apart from learning new Malay words, meeting new people, and visiting different places, we can confidently say that the memories of this trip would be the closest to our hearts for many decades to come. Travelling is construed to be ephemeral when one enjoys the tranquillity and resuscitation gets a break from the mundane routine. Recently, we visited Malaysia on a school trip. We were all fortunate enough to explore all the major tourist spots of that nation. Firstly, we visited the Genting Highlands through the Skyway. We were spellbound by the overwhelming beauty of that place. The Marvellous Mall encompassed many rides, shops, and theme parks, which were fantastic. The lip-smacking cuisines at the Genting Highlands were amazing. We stayed at First World Hotel, which has its name in the Guinness Book of World Records because it has more than 7,000 rooms. The experience at Snow Park was beyond words. Next day, we went to Sunway Lagoon and the water rides in the park were thrilling. We felt over the moon while riding the water slides and other exotic rides. In Kuala Lumpur, we went to the KL Tower and other popular landmarks such as the King’s Palace. Further, Kuala Lumpur is known for another skyscraper — PETRONAS Twin Towers.

Many of these theme parks also offer quality accommodation, massive shopping venues, and ample dining options, making them convenient one-stop destinations for travelling families. On our trip to Malaysia, we got an opportunity to visit some amazing theme parks. While water parks such as Sunway Lagoon Theme Park in Petaling Jaya consists of many attractions for those who want to cool down in Malaysia’s hot tropical climate, the visitors can also find picturesque theme parks in Genting Highlands where the whole family can enjoy. The theme- parks in Genting Highlands have thrilling roller- coaster rides in Genting Theme Park or one can also visit Berjaya Hills. Malaysia has people from multiple races and regions, and tourists find it easier to visit Malaysia to get a glimpse of Asia as a whole. Besides cultural diversity, Malaysia has several attractive spots like Genting Highlands, the King’s Palace, Batu Caves and several scenic islands to attract tourists. Thus Malaysia serves as a great destination for tourists to learn about diverse Asian cultures. Malaysia is the third richest Southeast Asia country. Growth in tourism helps in creating job opportunities and strengthens the local economy. With focus on earning national revenue, increased social stability and better services are offered as the government takes initiatives to improve infrastructure and services for enhancing tourism in the country. Also, the Malay communities operate with harmony and peace making it easier for the country to work and create a bright experience for the tourists who visit the country throughout the year, from all across the world. Malaysia is known to be one of the best places for coastal tourism around the world. Langkawi and Kedah are some favourite tourist hotspots. Relishing authentic food in Malaysia is one of the best travel experiences. Marked as a relatively safe country, tourists will not face many problems. Boasting that Malaysia is one of the most vibrant economies in south-east Asia, the country has witnessed noticeable industrial growth and political stability over time. The reports suggest that 25.9 million international tourists visited Malaysia in the year 2017. This proves that if the tourism sector is developed, Malaysia can achieve a faster rate of development and improve its infrastructure. Given the circumstances, the government has made tourism as one of the most pivotal factors to earn revenue for the country. Tourism industry has become a fuel to accelerate the country’s economic growth. Further, it is the experience that adds to the visit and not only the infrastructure of the country. Traditional Malay villages provide for an atypical trip. The cuisine of Malaysia reflects the multi-ethnic culture of its population and is defined by its diversity. There is strong influence from Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Javanese, and Sumatran cuisines. Apam Balik and Nasi kerabu are some famous food dishes. Beef, crab, and chicken are favourite ingredients. The famous drinks are Teh tarik and tea, both of which are quite similar. Popular sports in Malaysia include badminton, bowling, football, squash, and field hockey. Wau is a traditional form of kite-flying. Sepak Takraw is a game in which a rattan ball is kept in the air without using hands. A traditional game played during the rice harvest season is gasing in which large tops (weighing around 5 kg) are thrown by unfurling a rope and scooped off the ground while spinning. At times, these tops are known to spin for over an hour. Other sports are Dragon dancing and Dragon boat racing. Further, Malaysia’s has a long coastline, so a number of adventure water sports like scuba diving and white water rafting are also popular. Malaysia is a multi–ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual nation. Different ethnic groups in Malaysia maintain separate cultural identities. The society of Malaysia has been described as “Asia in miniature”. Although the Constitution of Malaysia says that all Malays are Muslims, the culture of this country draws on the varied cultures of the different people. The first people to live in Malaysia were indigenous tribes. Later, the Malays moved there from mainland Asia in ancient times. When trade began with China and India, there was increased immigration. The Persians, Arabs, and the British also influenced the Malay culture to a large extent. In 2019, the population of Malaysia was estimated to be 32.6 million. About 29.4 million are Malaysian residents and about 3.2 million came from outside the country. A majority of the Malaysian population follows Islamic religion. Since most of the population is Muslim, you will see women wearing the tudung, a type of hijab. However, many people also dress formally that include suits, ties, shirts, and black-coloured slacks. The dress that men traditionally wear is called Baju Melayu, THE MUTI-ETHNIC SOCIETY OF MALAYSIA
