Brain Drain “estimates from the American Community Survey show that Nebraska
is losing out overall — annually seeing some 2,300 more highly
educated people move out than move into the state.”
– Dec. 12, 2016-Omaha World Herald
76 percent of respondents said affordable and convenient
transportation options other than cars is at least somewhat important
when deciding where to live and work
65 percent of respondents believe investing in schools,
transportation choices and walkable areas is a better way to grow
the economy than investing in recruiting companies to move to the area.
49 percent of respondents someday want to live in a walkable
community, while only seven percent want to live where they have to
drive to most places.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: So why do we care about transportation choices? Nebraska is losing talent to other parts of the country If we look at the two largest cohorts in our population– Millennials and Baby Boomers– we start to overlapping priorities
  • #4: [Current Statistics] Omaha is a car-centric city, where many people don’t have choices about how to get around We’re above the national average for the number of people drove alone As traffic continues to get worse– the Fed Our traffic probl
  • #5: We know people are cycling all over our community And this is just from one app– Strava– so we know a lot more activity is going on
  • #6: There are some major investments being made in our community over the next few years The Bus Rapid Transit project will have a rail-like service on Dodge Heartland B-Cycle is adding 35 new stations, to double the size of the current system And already we can see how these trips are connected, people increasingly use bikes to get to Metro bus service
  • #7: Scheduling information about Metro bus routes is available through Google Transit, in the coming years this will be real-time data We know the locations of the bike trails and other facilities like B-Cycle stations, but these systems don’t work together Which makes it difficult to take that first step towards changing our culture by planning a trip with a car
