Trailer
In the trailer of The Descent, it does not mention any of the backstory about the
film, this is because the start of the film is very boring and there isn’t anything
interesting to be in the trailer besides the crash of Sarah’s husband and daughter
but they forget about that in the film. The use of action in the trailer shows the
audience that the movie is more of a scary action packed film instead of a
survival and monster movies type of film, which it is. The suspense in the trailer
shows that it will have jump scare moments such as when the crawler jumps out
behind Juno when Sarah thinks she saw someone. The use of graphics in the film
are very effective because it shows the stages of horror in the film and shows
what the girls are going through e.g. “claustrophobia” and “hallucinations”. It also
says it is the best thriller since alien, so this would give the idea of the film being
a film similar to alien, being scary and a survival type of film, the Descent also
included the text to say, if you liked alien you should come and watch the
Descent because its very similar and the alien is a well known film. The sound of
the heart beat effect shows the film to include a lot of suspense in the film as well
as the trailer. There is a lot of movement in the trailer to show the film is not a
boring film and is action packed with a lot of blood, gore and guts. It also shows a
lot of the fights between the girls and the crawlers to show they are fighting and
trying to survive against an unknown creature, which they want to find out what
it is. They do see a glimpse of the creature when they see it jump out behind out
Junos’ back in the trailer and would want to see more of it. It only shows the girls
in the cave being dark and scary, this shows that they are underground in need
of help and it shows that being in the dark, there is not way out and they try to
use as much darkness they can, this is why they use the flares as the are moving
forward to create showdown also showering the cave in a red light, the red light
around the cave represent blood, and it means it going to be the girls blood, they
also use night vision cameras so they can’t see the full image of the screen so it
creates the suspense of something about to jump out at them. To watch the
trailer you wouldn’t have to pay but you would have to pay for the internet
connectivity you are using. You would also have to pay to see the movie in the
cinema, varying the cost by how many people you take or if you watch the movie
online you would also be paying for the internet and you pay for the movie if you
purchase it on DVD, Blue-ray or 3D movies.
Poster
The poster shows the close up facial expression of the character in
the bottom right of the poster, it shows that she is cut and has a lot
of blood on her head, eye and lips. The blood and cuts on the poster
show that there is a lot of blood and gore in the film and shows the
audience there is a death in the film. In the top left there is glimpse
of light illuminated the characters face on the bottom right corner.
This shows that is a way out of the cave but out of reach for the
characters. In the top left you can see a crawler hiding in the wall,
this shows that if you want to find a way out the cave you cant leave
without a fight, you will have to get through the crawlers to get out.
The character in the bottom right is also looking the other way show
that she is looking for a way out, or there is something
coming after her.
Billboard
The billboard is very similar to the poster. They are changed
and adapted the darkness of the photo and extended the
width to make it even larger and more inviting so more
people can see it. The text has been moved so they are next to
each other.
Campaign Change
During the making of the Descent there was a campaign change after
the 77 attacks. Unfortunately of the side of the bus that had been
attacked there was a poster of the Descent on it. The underground
train that got attacked trapped people “underground” and the film of
the Descent were people that were also trapped “underground”. To
show respect they changed the style and design of the poster so it
doesn’t remind the audience about the attack.

The website of the Descent shows us an intro to
the film then the new official image for the film,
with the title of the film and the slogan which
reads “Scream your last breathe” with the release
date of the film in cinemas. On the website it gives
the option to download the film, watch the trailer,
gallery, the cast etc. It gives you information on the
website about the company of the Descent and
information about the studios where it was casted.
On the bottom left it shows the age restriction of
the film so you know what age it you have to be to
watch the film. It also shows you that the DVD is out now by showing a photo of
the DVD on the left part of the website.
