The

Attitudes
Matthew 5:1-16
Part 2 of 3 (vv. 6-9)
True Righteousness…
•What is true righteousness?
•Vs 20 is, as I shared, I think, the
key to understanding the purpose
of the Sermon on the Mount
20 “For I say to you that unless your
righteousness surpasses that of the scribes
and Pharisees, you will not enter the
kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:20, NASB
True Righteousness…
•What is true righteousness?
•Reminder– the Greek word for
righteousness– “di-kai-o-su-ne’”
•It means equity of character or act;
specifically [Christian] justification
•Last time we looked at the first
three happy-tudes, this time 4-6
•To be a happy Christian, live these…
When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on
the mountain; and after He sat down, His
disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth
and began to teach them, saying,
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they
shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall
inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall
receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they
shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they
shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who have been
persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you
and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of
evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and
be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for
in the same way they persecuted the prophets
who were before you.
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt
has become tasteless, how can it be made salty
again? It is no longer good for anything, except
to be thrown out and trampled under foot by
men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a
hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a
lamp and put it under a basket, but on the
lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in
the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in
such a way that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:1-16, NASB
A. Beatitude #4
•Vs 6, those who hunger
and thirst for
righteousness…
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and
thirst for righteousness, for they shall be
satisfied.”
Matthew 5:6, NASB
A. Beatitude #4
•Vs 6, those who hunger
and thirst for
righteousness…
•The “attitude” here is our
attitude toward God
•Our righteousness is like
filthy rags– we must see us
as he does before salvation
A. Beatitude #4
•Remember: In my flesh,
there is nothing good
•We can only please God by
receiving and living in His
righteousness
•True believers have an
appetite for spiritual things–
ask what they desire and you
will know who they really are
B. Beatitude #5…
•Vs 7, the merciful…
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall
receive mercy.”
Matthew 5:7, NASB
B. Beatitude #5…
•Vs 7, the merciful…
•The ability to be merciful
comes from BE-ing 1-4
•The Greek word is eleemon (Pronounced,
el-eh-ay’-mon)– compassionate, actively
merciful– not legalism, showing mercy to get mercy
•It is the biblical principal of sowing and
reaping– we are merciful because Jesus showed us mercy…
“For judgment will be merciless to one who
has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over
judgment.”
James 2:13, NASB
C. Beatitude #6…
•Vs 8, the pure in heart…
•5-8 are the results of
1-4 in your life
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they
shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8, NASB
C. Beatitude #6…
•Vs 8, the pure in heart…
•In this one, possibly the
most wonderful reward
•Greater intimacy with God
than imaginable
•This must be our greatest
motivation for purity– not
simply a fear of getting
caught, or consequences
