Learning as an active process Matthew Neason
Constructivism Ideology Learners are information constructors Information is not acquired, it is modified to fit a subjective reality Diverges into cognitive and social elements
Social Constructivism A theory introduced by Lev  Vygotsky Development is culturally relevant and influenced by all social interactions Learning is collaborative and dependent upon social success Teaching utilized a guided learning approach The importance of knowledge is determined by social interaction
Cognitive contructivism Theory given merit by Jean Piaget Classrooms are to be filled with fascinating objects to provoke exploration Learning is active Learning is wholistic Focus on introspection and individual perception
Intelligence Constructivists find the I.Q. system to paint an incomplete picture Multiple intelligences working together Developed by Gardner (Cognitive theorist) Linguistic Logical Spatial Kinesthetic Musical Interpersonal Intrapersonal Naturalist
Learning development Piaget believed that children go through discrete stages of development Dewey observed different levels of “The thinking Ladder” Learning and cognitive development are both constructed by the learner and guided by the teacher
Teaching as a constructivist Learning occurs in a meaningful context, skills must not stand alone Teachers act as coaches as well as dispensers of knowledge Teachers lay a foundation and watch students build on it
Constructivist Students Gather knowledge and incorporate it into their own subjective reality Gain insight into matters by applying socially relevant information Learning is a continuous process of re-evaluation and synthesis of new perspectives
Reflection Constructivist learning theory has many boons for educational reform, yet cannot stand alone. Constructivist doctrine can be incorporated into any classroom and for me specifically it represents a bold move towards student centered education. This learning theory leaves the instructor considerable freedom to incorporate a varied multimedia curriculum that appeals to multiple intelligences and learning styles.
