3. Identifying Interactions
There are multiple known drug interactions, all of which can have harmful side effects:
● Drug-drug
○ Taking Coumadin and Diflucan can lead to a dangerous increase in bleeding.
● Drug-nonprescription (OTC)
○ Ibuprofen may reduce diuretic effectiveness.
● Drug-food
○ Taking statins and consuming grapefruit juice increases the risk of
liver/kidney failure.
● Drug-disease
○ Decongestants, which increase blood pressure, are not suitable for people
with hypertension.
4. Opportunity
Creating a telehealth application, “MIS”:
● Links to EHR
● Scans items that help identify interactions
○ Alerts patient on items that may cause side-
effects
○ Offers alternatives to items that may interact
● Sends reminders to take prescriptions on time
● On-dial services in case of adverse reaction
6. Surveys on Identifying Drug Interactions
● Drug-drug
○ Out of 153 prescriptions, drug-drug interactions were found in 67.32%
○ Out of 1052 prescribed drugs, 412 potential interactions were identified. 19.66% minor, 77.67%
moderate, 7.19% major
● Drug-over-the-counter (OTC)
○ Out of 53.8% of patients, adverse drug reactions are due to OTC drugs
● Drug-food
○ From 1991-2014, 55 suspected ADRs cases were reported due to the simultaneous use of health-
enhancing products (supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins) and drugs
● Drug-disease
○ Older patients who develop diseases later on in life are more likely at risk for drug interactions
○ 43% of elderly patients in a nursing home were prescribed potentially inappropriate medications
(PIM)

15. Summary
Drug Interaction Risks:
Various research findings
have shown that
medications can have
harmful reactions with
other substances, such as
food, beverages, or
existing health issues,
resulting in negative
outcomes.
Solution Proposed: The
Medical Information
System (MIS) app
streamlines the procedure
for patients to recognize
possible medication
interactions, improving
adherence and safety
through the employment of
Electronic Health Records
(EHRs), notifications, and
alternative
recommendations.
Economic Viability: The
anticipated revenue of $4.4
million in the initial year,
coupled with an estimated
expenditure of $2 million,
indicates a substantial
return on investment (ROI)
of 120% in the first year
and more than 500% by
the third year.
Target Market and
Revenue Streams: The
application is targeted to
reach 30,000 patients
through partnerships with
medical facilities,
promotional activities, and
cost-effective subscription
options, securing a varied
revenue stream.
Wider Benefits: By
focusing on medication
interactions, the project
seeks to lower medical
costs while also improving
patient safety, medication
compliance, and
satisfaction.
