Assignment 26: Individual
Pitch
Jack Carroll
Choice of subgenre:
• The subgenre I have chosen is Home Invasion (Psychological/Killer).
The reason I chose this subgenre is because firstly this subgenre is not
seen often and also it is a realistic subgenre to try create at our
standard unlike a subgenre like Zombie where you would need great
mise en scene to make it realistic.
5 examples of films from this subgenre:
• Don’t Breathe
• Panic Room
• You’re Next
• The Purge
• Home invasion
Conventions of the Home Invasion subgenre:
• In most home invasion films the main events happen during the night.
This is to make it more realistic as most break ins are not done during
the day.
• Another convention is that the protagonist always tries to get help in
some way but they never end up getting any.
• In home invasion films there are always a lot of props used for
example guns, knifes, baseball bats, etc.
My idea:
• The protagonist is home alone and he is cooking himself some dinner.
• He sees a shadow fly past quickly but he turns around and doesn’t see anything so he just forgets
about it.
• A bit later on he starts hearing footsteps up stairs.
• The protagonist gets very scared at this point and tries to call his girlfriend who is currently out
but just as it starts ringing his phone dies.
• He then hears noises coming down from the basement as well so he knows that there is more
than one person invading his house.
• He gets himself a kitchen knife and starts slowly walking upstairs.
• As he gets near the top of the stairs, one of the antagonists comes out of one of the bedrooms
and sees the protagonist.
• The antagonist is holding a hammer and chases him down the stairs but slips so the protagonist
holds him down to the floor.
• The antagonist is begging the protagonist to let him go but the other antagonist from the
basement hears and comes up behind the protagonist and kills him.
Conventions I am meeting:
• Using various props such as the kitchen knife and hammer.
• The protagonist tries to call his girlfriend for help but his phone died
so he couldn’t get any help.
• My idea is set at night when most home invasions usually occur.
How will my idea be unique:
• Firstly, the subgenre I have chosen is unique in itself as it is not
commonly used much in AS Media.
• Also, there isn’t much backstory so it creates a lot of narrative
enigmas for the audience on why they are invading his home and who
are they, etc.
Narrative enigmas:
• Who are the villains?
• Why are they invading the persons home?
• Did they know him personally?
• Why are they carrying weapons?
• Did they know he was likely to get a weapon as well?
• What were they looking for?
Targets:
• My targets are to have a wide variety of camera shots and camera
angles.
• To have good editing and a pace of editing that matches whats
happening.
• To have good mise en scene and realistic fake blood.
