Michel Gondry
   1963 - present
Michel Gondry is very focused on creating
visuals to the audience which represent each
individual part of a track. This is why I am
particularly fond of his work. He firstly starts
on paper, drawing symbols and dashes for
each beat and sound and then sets out to
assign a relevant object/image to these.
An image of his planning for
                                                     the video ‘Star Guitar’

Gondry tends not to set out to achieve a
narrative piece but one which engages the
audience through stimulating and exciting
visuals. Gondry also produces videos for
predominantly mainstream artists such as
     Paul McCartney and Radiohead.

Daft Punk – Around The World
This is my favourite video by Michel Gondry. I really enjoy how the mise-en-
scene is manipulated in order to represent each individual element of the song.

Gondry described (in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RYzYPaPpYs)
how he created all of the characters based of the different elements of the song
i.e. vocals, keyboard, bass, drum and guitar. For example the tall guys with the
small head represent the bass and the skeletons represent the guitar. Gondry
described the guitar in this song as “itchy” and he immediately thought of a
skeleton as being something which is quite itchy.

Keyboard Each step down represents a new “Itchy” guitar
beat. They are dressed as athletes
as they need to be fit in order to
keep up with the fast tempo
