Microsoft Azure cloud computing
What is cloud computing?
Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services —
including servers, storage, databases, networking, software,
analytics, and intelligence — over the Internet to offer faster
innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.
You typically pay only for cloud services you use, helping you
lower your operating costs, run your infrastructure more
efficiently, and scale as your business needs change.
Top Bene
fi
ts of Clouds
Here are six common reasons organizations are turning to
cloud services
Cost
Cloud computing eliminates the
capital expense of buying hardware
and software, the round-the-clock
electricity for power and cooling, and
the IT experts for managing the
infrastructure.
Speed
Vast amounts of computing
resources can be provisioned in
minutes.
Global scale
More or less computing power,
storage, bandwidth — right when
they’re needed, and from the
right geographic location.
Productivity
Cloud computing removes the need
for hardware setup, software
patching, so IT teams can spend
time on achieving more important
business goals.
Performance
The biggest cloud computing
services run on a worldwide network
of secure datacenters, which are
regularly upgraded to the latest
generation of fast and efficient
computing hardware
Security
Cloud providers offer a broad set
of technologies, and controls that
strengthen your security posture
overall, helping protect your
data, apps, and infrastructure.
Azure Cloud Technologies
Microsoft Cloud Computing
Azure global infrastructure is made up of two key
components —physical infrastructure and connective
network components. The physical component is
comprised of 160+ physical datacenters, arranged
into regions, and linked by one of the largest
interconnected networks on the planet.
Microsoft is a leading global provider of cloud
computing services for businesses of all
sizes.

More than 95 percent of Fortune 500
companies use Azure.
Global infrastructure
Data centers
Azure datacenters are unique physical buildings — located
all over the globe — that house a group of networked
computer servers.
Market share of clouds
For full-year 2020, total cloud infrastructure
services spending grew 33% to US$142
billion, up from US$107 billion in 2019.
Demand was higher than expected.
Microsoft’s cloud business is clearly generating
success for the company. Intelligent Cloud
delivered the highest operating income of all
segments this quarter at $6.4 billion, which is
36% of total consolidated operating income.
Azure vs AWS

Pay less with Azure
AWS is 5 times more expensive than Azure for Windows
Server and SQL Server
With the most global regions of any cloud provider, Azure
offers the scale you need to bring your applications close
to your users around the world.
Organizations all over the world recognize Microsoft Azure
over Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the most trusted
cloud for enterprise and hybrid infrastructure.
More global regions than any
other cloud provider

Find underutilized resources with Azure
Advisor—and get recommendations on
how to reduce your spend by
reconfiguring or consolidating them.

3

Reserve instances for consistent
workloads

Get a discount of up to 72 percent on
services when you prepay for a one- or
three-year term.

4

Configure autoscaling

Save by dynamically allocating and de-
allocating resources to match your
performance needs.

5

Set up budgets and allocate costs to
teams and projects

Create and manage budgets for the Azure
services you use or subscribe to—and monitor
your organization’s cloud spending—with Azure
Cost Management.

6

Choose the right Azure compute
service

Simulation framework for the Audi A8 was operated on in-house
compute and storage clusters at two locations.

In Germany, for example, a cluster with approximately 12
petabytes storage capacity and 60 computers in parallel was
used to create the simulation.

However, further expansion of the data centre would not have
been economical. Adrian James has reason to believe that next-
generation vehicles will generate four gigabytes of raw sensor
data per second.

To be able to run the same number of simulations, Audi would
have to acquire and operate approximately 200 petabytes of
storage capacity and the same amount of computing capacity.

  • 23. Simulation framework for the Audi A8 was operated on in-house compute and storage clusters at two locations. In Germany, for example, a cluster with approximately 12 petabytes storage capacity and 60 computers in parallel was used to create the simulation. However, further expansion of the data centre would not have been economical. Adrian James has reason to believe that next- generation vehicles will generate four gigabytes of raw sensor data per second. To be able to run the same number of simulations, Audi would have to acquire and operate approximately 200 petabytes of storage capacity and the same amount of computing capacity. • 24. XBOX Video gaming Xbox game publishers access royalties even faster now with Blockchain ‣ Azure Cosmos DB ‣ Azure Blockchain ‣ Power BI United States Products and Services Country Corporate (10,000+ employees) Organization Size “With Azure Blockchain Service, the people who play in this economy— developers, publishers, platforms— can work better together and have more con fi dence in what we share back and forth.“ —Tim Stuart: Xbox Chief Financial O ffi cer Microsoft Video games evolve at warp speed, revolutionizing the way players play. But the fi nancial reporting systems used for compensating game publishers were based on an accounting model created when quill on parchment was still in vogue. Although spreadsheets hasten fi nancial processing, using them to calculate and reconcile game royalties—which often cascade out to musicians, special e ff ects houses, and a widening pool of other providers—gobbled time and kept fi nance teams from more strategic work. Objective point Solution The Xbox Finance team adopted blockchain technology, seeking to eliminate the need for time-consuming reconciliation and shorten the access time to royalties information for its game publishers from 45 days to minutes. Publishers can pull data o ff the ledger directly into Azure Cosmos DB and visualize in Microsoft Power BI for further insights.
