During the early Middle Ages from 500-1000 AD, monastic life focused on rules of poverty, chastity and obedience. Nursing was provided within monasteries and by various religious orders. From 1000-1500 AD, the Crusades led knights to take on nursing roles, and religious orders like the Knights of St. John and the Order of St. Francis provided nursing care. During the Reformation, Catholic institutions were replaced by poor conditions in workhouses, with untrained individuals like Sairey Gamp acting as nurses. The Industrial Revolution brought changes but also child labor and poor working conditions.
