Editor's Notes

  • #3: Unfamiliar with what a resume is? Let’s break it down.
  • #4: Keep the information as truthful as possible—lies will come back to haunt youDon’t include irrelevant information (political affiliation, religion, sexual preference)Put your best foot forward. Update your resume regularly with new achievements and professional affiliations as they occur. You never know when they will benefit you.
  • #6: Sit down and make a list of everything you can think of.
  • #7: Write down all of the dates that you worked. Months and years at all of your relevant positions.
  • #8: You can find a complete list of Power Words on About.com under Careers > Job Searching (http://jobsearch.about.com/od/resumes/a/actionverb.htm)Just remember to watch your verb tense throughout your resume. Ensure that the subject-verb agreement is consistent.
  • #9: Watch this video shared by Boston College, interviewing a variety of hiring managers and human resource professionals.
  • #10: Let’s talk about these three types of resumes and how they can benefit you.
  • #11: The traditional resume is probably one of the most common formats used in every industry. Everyone recognizes it, but the challenge is, “How do I make mine unique?”
  • #12: Although it may seem boring, you should always have a plain-text copy of your resume available, which is why the traditional resume format is so popular. It’s easy to create, fax, and email. Easily recognized by human resource professionals, it won’t count against you when submitted for a position.
  • #13: If the job description says you need a bachelor’s, the odds are—you wouldn’t be applying if you didn’t have one! Consider rearranging the sections of your traditional resume so that your skills and qualifications are highlighted before your work experience and your education is listed last.
  • #14: Add some color to your resume and turn heads when you get to the interview.
  • #15: This is a great resume to use at job fairs and in-person interviews, but it can cause the file size to become cumbersome. Emails will load slow depending on the connection quality and may be more of a hassle than a benefit.
  • #16: Printing the dynamic resume in full-color will definitely benefit you when you enter the room. Subtly pay attention to the interviewer’s eyes and be sure to talk up your experiences at any company they may have lingered on. They were probably impressed by your affiliation and would like to hear more.
  • #17: If you’re applying for jobs online, you may need a digital resume that combines your professional experiences with your personal online brand.
  • #18: Keep your digital resume short and sweet. This can be creative, including links to writing samples, graphic designs or artwork, and even your professional social media accounts.
  • #19: Support the belief that you’re results-oriented and that you have the desired qualification for the position. Keep your writing concise and to the point.
  • #20: Most job descriptions don’t tell you the full story. You could be qualified to do half of what it says, and learn the other on-the-job. Show an eagerness to learn and the interviewer will certainly be interested in you as a candidate.
