“What you need to
know…at Monroe”
For New Rochelle campus activities, see page 2.
continued on page 4
Never before has the Bronx campus been so
busy both in the classrooms and out of the
classrooms. With an eye towards helping students
learn, grow, and express, the Office of Student
Services has developed an array of activities and
programs that provide a little something for
everyone. In fact, a visit to King Hall is not
complete without a glance at the colorful TV
plasma screen display, and the array of posters announcing happenings, as well as a
visit to the information tables in the lobby.
“It’s no secret that students do better academically if their other intellectual and
creative needs are being met,” said Student Affairs VP Roberta Greenberg. “Also, we
take the notion of a family atmosphere at Monroe College very seriously and when
we participate in student activities and performances, we all benefit, faculty and
staff included.”
During the Winter ’09 semester, social clubs and activities on
the Bronx campus were plentiful:
The Poetry Club held its first event during Black History
Month in February, called Be Inspired. Students enjoyed lunch
while listening to the poetic phrasings. Speaking of inspiration,
Professors Geoffrey Smith and Flemmie Kittrell jumped out of
their seats and dropped pearls of poetic knowledge on the audience as well.
On February 26, the Rhythm & Moves Dance Club held their debut performance,
Dancing Through Time in the King Hall gym. Dancing was a
journey through various dance styles that loosely tracked the
development of African dance through the popular styles of
Hip-Hop dance that we see in videos today. A narrative went
along to give a brief history of each style performed. The
dances choreographed were African, Gum-Boot, Tap, Salsa,
Fraternity Step-Dance, and Hip-Hop.

NEW ROCHELLE ACTIVITIES
 MC Theatrics did a great
job of bringing to life the
issues facing women as the
‘VOICES OF SHE’ sounded
loud and clear on Thursday,
March 19th at the Union
Baptist Church. There were
varieties of musical numbers
and theatrical performances designed to highlight a range of issues facing
women including relationships, marriage, children, drugs, abuse,
pregnancy, sexism, and careers.
Ultimately, the show inspired cooperation between the sexes.
Congratulations to all involved in the production which, judging from
the crowd’s response, was a triumph in every sense of the word.
 Monroe’s young debate team continues to excel! They have competed
against some of the best in the nation and held their own.
Following a gripping debate
one judge was heard to remark,
“These are the best first-year
debaters I’ve seen!”Another
administrator summed up a
recent performance this way,
“The Monroe debaters were
‘David’s’ amongst ‘Goliaths’ and you proved the giants mere mortals.”
The debate team’s excellence and professionalism stem directly from
the dedicated faculty advisor, Professor William Bishop, with an assist
from Dean Karenann Carty, and Mr. Walter Eddie.
For more information on the Debate Team send an email to
wbishop@monroecollege.edu
 Club Awards are presented each
month in New Rochelle during the
Monthly Club Meeting. February
award recipients were:
Predestined:
Community Service Achievers
Monroe Drummers:
Most improved club
Media Crew: Most involved Club
 Pants Down and Poppin’ was a panel discussion on the fashion trends
that students have accepted and their impact on success. The esteemed
panelists and attending
students had a positive
exchange of beliefs and ideas.
Many valid sub-issues
were also discussed about
self-identity, social
responsibility, making firm
decisions, and role modeling.
BACHELOR’S PROGRAM
The Bronx Bachelor’s Program President’s & Dean’s
List Awards Ceremony was held at the Eastwood
Manor on Friday, March 20 to celebrate academic
achievement from the Fall, 2009 semester. More than
400 students and
guests attended as
well as staff and
faculty members.
Students were
celebrated in a
very Monroe-like way: photos, food, dancing, awards,
and gifts. The evening was punctuated by President
Stephen Jerome’s address as he talked about the
importance of possessing advanced degrees in order
to compete in today’s economy. 
KING GRADUATE SCHOOL
On Tuesday, March 31 Seth Fischoff, Chief
Investment Officer, Agamas
Capital Management, gave a
presentation in Ustin Hall
on the timely topic of
“Banking, Housing and the
Current Credit Crisis.”

risks and incentives, responsibilities of financial inter-
mediaries, potential solutions and their repercussions.

impressed Monroe
College on March 5
with their historical
premier perform-
ance in the King
Hall gym; not to mention that they are the first Bronx
Campus Drama Club – ever! To top it off, the event
was a tribute to and featured Ntozake Shange, an
historical and international literary figure who
authored For Colored Girls Who Have Considered
Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.
There was also the Sister to Sister Club, the Man-to-
Man Club, a rousing talent show, and much more.

implications of the highly-publicized Chris Brown/
Rihana DV incident.
 On March 19 the CJ Club hosted its 2nd annual Women’s History Month
celebration. Approximately 150 students attended this event which recognized
the accomplishments of women in the criminal justice field. The guest speaker
was Donna Roman-Hernandez, an award-winning independent Latina film

Department after 26 years of police service. 
ALLIED HEALTH
For two days in March, the Bronx Allied Health Professions Club
hosted a Marrow Donor Drive for the Icla da Silva Foundation,
established in 1992 after the death of Icla da Silva, a thirteen-year-
old Brazilian girl who was diagnosed with leukemia and died
despite her family’s dire efforts to discover a matching donor.
Anyone between the ages of 18 – 60 who meets the stated health require-
ments may enroll. For just a few minutes of your time, who knows whose life
you may save?
For more information see Prof. Marlene Hollick on the third floor of
West Hall. 

in the future. Four of those teams are from New York City. In their entries and through the finals the teams
are judged on teamwork, skill and leadership abilities. 

with the staff and the facilities and they are
looking forward to exploring opportunities to
partner with Monroe College! 

On March 14, the art history class at Monroe
College went to the Metropolitan Museum of
Art in Manhattan. Students toured the Ancient
Egyptian, Ancient Near East, and Greek and

BUSINESS
 On March 19
the SIFE Team
from Osaka
University of
Commerce
visited with the
Monroe College SIFE team to discuss developing innovative projects that would
impact their respective communities. Dr. Tilokie Depoo, Sam Walton Fellow of
the Monroe SIFE Team, stated that “it was exciting to meet SIFE colleagues
from across the world and to share and learn from each other.”
 On March 31 the Monroe SIFE team was
given an award by the HPEDC Women’s
Business Resource Center for their work in
supporting entrepreneurs in the Bronx.
 On Thursday,
March 26th, the
SIFE team hosted three projects in the lobby of Main
Hall: Green Apple City, Finding Your Dreams and
Let’s Can Hunger. These initiatives focused on
recycling, saving energy, retrieving unclaimed funds,
and fighting hunger. 
ACCOUNTING
Monroe’s excellent Accounting
program continues to pave
the way for students to launch
well-paying careers. Even
during the recession, major
companies like Deloitte,
PricewaterhouseCoopers,
and IBM continue to pursue
and hire Monroe College
accounting majors. When they
come to Monroe they usually
bring along a former Monroe
student who is now in their
employ to entice current
students.
For example, Shanel Hiland
will begin at Deloitte as an
Assistant Auditor for
mEnterprise Risk Services this
fall and Sasha-Ann Russell
was also hired by Deloitte. 

Dr. Tilokie Depoo, Sam Walton Fellow of the Monroe SIFE Team, stated that “it was exciting to meet SIFE colleagues from across the world and to share and learn from each other.”  On March 31 the Monroe SIFE team was given an award by the HPEDC Women’s Business Resource Center for their work in supporting entrepreneurs in the Bronx.  On Thursday, March 26th, the SIFE team hosted three projects in the lobby of Main Hall: Green Apple City, Finding Your Dreams and Let’s Can Hunger. These initiatives focused on recycling, saving energy, retrieving unclaimed funds, and fighting hunger.  ACCOUNTING Monroe’s excellent Accounting program continues to pave the way for students to launch well-paying careers. Even during the recession, major companies like Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and IBM continue to pursue and hire Monroe College accounting majors. When they come to Monroe they usually bring along a former Monroe student who is now in their employ to entice current students. For example, Shanel Hiland will begin at Deloitte as an Assistant Auditor for mEnterprise Risk Services this fall and Sasha-Ann Russell was also hired by Deloitte.  Shanel Hiland Sasha-Ann Russell
