MODULE 3
Starting the Computer
Peripheral devices
A computer peripheral :
• is a device that is connected to a compute
• but is not part of the core computer architecture.
• The core elements of a computer are
the central processing unit,
 power supply,
 motherboard and
the computer case containing these three
components.
Types of Peripheral Devices
• There are many different peripheral devices, but
they fall into three general categories:
Input devices, such as a mouse and a keyboard
Output devices, such as a monitor and a printer
Storage devices, such as a hard drive or flash
drive
 Peripheral devices can be external or internal
 example, a printer is an external device
 while an optical disc drive is typically located
inside the computer case.
 Internal peripheral devices are also referred to as
integrated peripherals
Peripheral devices of a computer
Examples of Peripheral Devices
• The central processing unit (2),
• motherboard (8) and
• power supply are the core computer system.
 Expansion slots (4) on the motherboard make it possible to connect
internal peripherals, such as
o a video card
o sound card (not shown).
 Other internal peripherals shown are
o a hard disk drive (7) and
o an optical disc drive (6).
 External input peripherals are a scanner (1),
o display monitor (10),
o keyboard (13)
o mouse (14).
 External output peripherals are
o speakers (9)
o a printer (16).
 Note: labels 11 and 12 in the figure refer to software and are not
peripherals.
Safety and safe working place
• Safe working conditions help to prevent injury to
people and damage to computer equipment.
• A safe workspace is clean, organized, and
properly lighted.
• Everyone must understand and follow safety
procedures.
• The proper disposal or recycling of hazardous
computer components is a global issue.
• Make sure to follow regulations that govern how
to dispose of specific items.
General Safety Guidelines
• Follow the basic safety guidelines to prevent
cuts, burns, electrical shock, and damage to
eyesight.
• As is best practice, make sure that a fire
extinguisher and first-aid kit are available in
case of fire or injury.
1.Remove your watch any other jewelry and secure
loose cloth.
2.Turn off the power and unplug equipment before
performing service.
3.Cover any sharp edge inside the computer using the
tape
4.Don’t touch areas in printers that are hot or that use
high voltages.
5.Know where the fire extinguisher is located and how
to use it.
6.Keep foods and drinks out of your workspace.
7.Keep your work space out of clutter.
8.Bend your Knees when lifting heavy objects to avoid
injury to your back.
• Starting a computer running Windows XP
operating system
• Starting your computer is also known as
booting the computer.
• It is important to switch your computer on in
the correct way because the computer will
check the peripheral devices on start up.
• Starting the computer will also start the
operating system.
Sequence for starting a computer
1. Check peripheral device connections.
2. Turn on power at the power outlet.
3. If the monitor has a separate switch, turn it on.
4. Switch on the printer.
5. Check to see if there is a floppy disk in the floppy disk
drive if your computer has one. Eject the disk to ensure
the computer starts from the hard drive.
6. Switch on the system unit. If using a desktop PC the
power switch is usually a button on the front or side of
the system unit. If using a laptop the power switch is
usually at the top of the keyboard.
7. The computer will perform a start-up routine. When the
start-up routine has completed then the operating
system will start.
Sequence for shutting down a computer
Follow this sequence if you do not have to log off first.
1.Close all files (remember to save your latest work if
necessary).
2.Close all software programs.
3.Remove floppy disks or other storage media from
drives if necessary.
4.Click on Start on the taskbar. Select Turn Off
computer from the Start menu.
6.Check that Turn off is selected.
7.Click on OK to confirm.
Your computer may automatically turn the power off
but if not you will get a message like ‘It is now safe
to turn off your computer.’
8.Switch off the computer and the power
