post

empowerment
programme
As concerns for the environment continue to grow,
companies are recognising the importance of adapting
to new environmental trends in order to become
more sustainable and responsible corporate citizens.
This can be done through a variety of actions such as
implementing sustainable operations, developing
sustainable products and services, committing to
corporate social responsibility, adopting sustainable
corporate governance, and collaborating with external
partners to tackle environmental challenges.
These efforts help companies to minimise their
environmental footprint, to improve their reputation,
and to respond to the increasing demand for
sustainable products and services.

Operations are a key area that sustainability practices
can be incorporated. This can include:
• reducing energy consumption, water usage and
waste,
• implementing recycling programs and using
renewable energy sources.
• incorporating sustainable practices into their supply
chain management, by working with suppliers that
have sustainable practices,
• implementing sustainable logistics and distribution
strategies.

As we move towards a more sustainable future, it is
important to understand the differences between a
linear and circular economy.
The main principles of a circular economy focus on
minimizing waste, maximising resource efficiency, and
promoting regenerative systems.
On the other hand, a linear economy is based on a model of
constant growth and consumption, where resources are
extracted, turned into products, used, and then discarded
as waste. That is not sustainable in the long run.

Better Meets Reality publishes content across a range of sustainability related
topics and issues, including the impact on society and it's people, the
environment, the economy, and more. A Linear Economy: Definition,
Examples, Pros & Cons, & More - Better Meets Reality
The principles of the Linear Economy can be summarised:
• Take: Resources are extracted from natural sources to create products.
• Make: Resources are turned into products through manufacturing
processes.
• Use: Products are consumed and used by consumers.
• Dispose: Products are discarded as waste after they have been used.
• Growth: Linear economy is based on the principle of constant growth,
which means that more resources are needed to create more products,
and more products are needed to be sold to more consumers.
• Consumption: Linear economy is based on the principle of consumption,
which means that products are consumed and discarded at a faster rate,
leading to the constant need for new products and more resources.

• Design out waste and pollution: This principle aims to
eliminate the creation of waste and pollution by designing
products, processes, and systems that are closed-loop and
regenerative.
• Keep products and materials in use: This principle aims to
extend the life of products and materials by keeping them
in use for as long as possible through repair,
refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling.
• Regenerate natural systems: This principle aims to mimic
the regenerative processes found in nature by designing
systems that mimic natural systems, including closed-loop
water, nutrient, and energy cycles.

The Circular Economy in the context of hybrid work is a relatively
new merger. Cloud VO published a key article The Flexible Office
Space Industry and the Circular Economy - CloudVO.
Interestingly, they highlight that the co-working/flexible office
space industry is, in fact, a reuse and reduce industry. Shared or
service use models, where an asset is well designed and
maintained for the longest amount of time, and services the
greatest number of people is the circular economy sweet spot. If
you build in co-working as part of your business model, instead
of 50 people each having a table and chair, you can have 150
people use the 50 tables and chairs on a rota basis.
Collaboration is a principal element of the circular economy and is a
key part of the DNA of the flexible/coworking workspace model.

E-waste, or electronic waste, is a growing problem for
our planet. As technology advances and consumers
upgrade their devices more frequently, the amount
of electronic waste being generated is increasing
rapidly.
According to a report by the United Nations, the world

Remote working can have both positive and negative impacts
on waste management.
On one hand, it can lead to an increase in e-waste as
employees may require new or upgraded devices to work
remotely and dispose of their old devices when no longer
needed.
On the other hand, remote working can also lead to a
reduction in e-waste by reducing the need for office
equipment and paper.
To minimise the negative impact, companies should establish
clear policies and procedures for the disposal of electronic
devices and invest in more durable and sustainable devices.

A Forbes article 2022, Six Ways To Be A Sustainable Leader
(forbes.com) is interesting - “t’s not just about the big
things. Leaders can also set an example by doing the little
things, like recycling, using public transport, and eating
organic food.”
It highlights the best way to encourage sustainable practices
is to lead by example. If you want your employees to
recycle, make sure that recycling bins are available and
that recycling is easy to do. If you want your customers to
be more energy-efficient, ensure your products are energy-
efficient. By leading by example, you’ll inspire others to do
the same.
Make sustainability a part of your brand. If you want to be a
sustainable company, it’s not enough to have sustainability
goals — you need to ensure that your brand reflects these
values. Getting buy-in from the executive team and other
senior staff members is key to getting employees engaged.

Some easy to implement ideas:
• Offer incentives for employees that take advantage of green
commuting options. This can include things like taking the bus,
carpooling, or cycling to work for a hybrid working.
• You could also create a bike-friendly area to encourage your
employees to bike to work. This can include things like dedicated
bike lanes and secured bike storage at your worksite.
• Consider adding on-site showers, locker rooms, and free or
discounted bike-share memberships.

interesting suggestion by a contributor- Gamify green commuting:
Make sustainable mobility engaging and fun by introducing
gamification elements, such as competitions, rewards, and
recognition. Establish a points-based system where employees can

cycling, walking, or carpooling. Offer rewards and recognition for
employees who consistently make sustainable choices, creating a

  • 7. post pandemic empowerment programme Environmental responsibility should be a core part of company strategy. The World Economic Forum tell us that sustainability isn't just for green companies. WEF 2020 Why all companies should be sustainable | World Economic Forum (weforum.org) . It shares key methods: ● make progress through public-private collaborations and cross-industry partnerships ● work to source responsibly, minimize footprint ● innovate around the life cycle of a resource ● be transparent. 1. Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities I. How can a company become more sustainable and a more responsible corporate citizen?
  • 8. post pandemic empowerment programme As concerns for the environment continue to grow, companies are recognising the importance of adapting to new environmental trends in order to become more sustainable and responsible corporate citizens. This can be done through a variety of actions such as implementing sustainable operations, developing sustainable products and services, committing to corporate social responsibility, adopting sustainable corporate governance, and collaborating with external partners to tackle environmental challenges. These efforts help companies to minimise their environmental footprint, to improve their reputation, and to respond to the increasing demand for sustainable products and services. 1.Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities II. New Environmental Trends
  • 9. post pandemic empowerment programme Operations are a key area that sustainability practices can be incorporated. This can include: • reducing energy consumption, water usage and waste, • implementing recycling programs and using renewable energy sources. • incorporating sustainable practices into their supply chain management, by working with suppliers that have sustainable practices, • implementing sustainable logistics and distribution strategies. McKinsey 2020, Operations-driven sustainability | McKinsey shares that optimizing operations can unlock simultaneous environmental and financial benefits. 1. Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities III. Incorporating Sustainability Into Practice
  • 10. post pandemic empowerment programme As we move towards a more sustainable future, it is important to understand the differences between a linear and circular economy. The main principles of a circular economy focus on minimizing waste, maximising resource efficiency, and promoting regenerative systems. On the other hand, a linear economy is based on a model of constant growth and consumption, where resources are extracted, turned into products, used, and then discarded as waste. That is not sustainable in the long run. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation How to Build a Circular Economy | Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a wonderful NGO that explains the Circular Economy better than anyone else. 1. • 11. post pandemic empowerment programme Better Meets Reality publishes content across a range of sustainability related topics and issues, including the impact on society and it's people, the environment, the economy, and more. A Linear Economy: Definition, Examples, Pros & Cons, & More - Better Meets Reality The principles of the Linear Economy can be summarised: • Take: Resources are extracted from natural sources to create products. • Make: Resources are turned into products through manufacturing processes. • Use: Products are consumed and used by consumers. • Dispose: Products are discarded as waste after they have been used. • Growth: Linear economy is based on the principle of constant growth, which means that more resources are needed to create more products, and more products are needed to be sold to more consumers. • Consumption: Linear economy is based on the principle of consumption, which means that products are consumed and discarded at a faster rate, leading to the constant need for new products and more resources. 1. Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities IV. The Main Principles Of A Linear Economy
  • 12. post pandemic empowerment programme • Design out waste and pollution: This principle aims to eliminate the creation of waste and pollution by designing products, processes, and systems that are closed-loop and regenerative. • Keep products and materials in use: This principle aims to extend the life of products and materials by keeping them in use for as long as possible through repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling. • Regenerate natural systems: This principle aims to mimic the regenerative processes found in nature by designing systems that mimic natural systems, including closed-loop water, nutrient, and energy cycles. 1. • 13. post pandemic empowerment programme The Circular Economy in the context of hybrid work is a relatively new merger. Cloud VO published a key article The Flexible Office Space Industry and the Circular Economy - CloudVO. Interestingly, they highlight that the co-working/flexible office space industry is, in fact, a reuse and reduce industry. Shared or service use models, where an asset is well designed and maintained for the longest amount of time, and services the greatest number of people is the circular economy sweet spot. If you build in co-working as part of your business model, instead of 50 people each having a table and chair, you can have 150 people use the 50 tables and chairs on a rota basis. Collaboration is a principal element of the circular economy and is a key part of the DNA of the flexible/coworking workspace model. 1. Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities VII. • 15. post pandemic empowerment programme E-waste, or electronic waste, is a growing problem for our planet. As technology advances and consumers upgrade their devices more frequently, the amount of electronic waste being generated is increasing rapidly. According to a report by the United Nations, the world generated nearly 54 million metric tons of e-waste in 2019, and that number is expected to increase to 74 million metric tons by 2030. 1. Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities VII. What can we do? Place emphasis on E-waste Source: UN report: Time to seize opportunity, tackle challenge of e-waste
  • 16. post pandemic empowerment programme E-waste is a significant contributor to environmental pollution and health hazards. Many electronic devices contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can leach into the soil and water if not properly disposed of. Read more: ewastemonitor 1. Company Strategy and Environmental Responsibilities VII. What can we do? Place emphasis on E-waste
  • 17. post pandemic empowerment programme Remote working can have both positive and negative impacts on waste management. On one hand, it can lead to an increase in e-waste as employees may require new or upgraded devices to work remotely and dispose of their old devices when no longer needed. On the other hand, remote working can also lead to a reduction in e-waste by reducing the need for office equipment and paper. To minimise the negative impact, companies should establish clear policies and procedures for the disposal of electronic devices and invest in more durable and sustainable devices. 1. Measure and track the environmental impact: Regularly measure and track the environmental impact of remote teams to identify areas for improvement and to track progress.
  • 24. post pandemic empowerment programme Nowadays, many digital communication tools prioritize environmentally-friendly practices to minimize their impact on the environment. Covid 19 accelerated SME use of green communication tools including video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Skype, which allow remote teams to collaborate without having to travel. Zoom truly entered the public consciousness during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 and it was one of the fastest growing apps of the pandemic; meeting participants increased by 2900%. • 26. post pandemic empowerment programme A Forbes article 2022, Six Ways To Be A Sustainable Leader (forbes.com) is interesting - “t’s not just about the big things. Leaders can also set an example by doing the little things, like recycling, using public transport, and eating organic food.” It highlights the best way to encourage sustainable practices is to lead by example. If you want your employees to recycle, make sure that recycling bins are available and that recycling is easy to do. If you want your customers to be more energy-efficient, ensure your products are energy- efficient. By leading by example, you’ll inspire others to do the same. Make sustainability a part of your brand. If you want to be a sustainable company, it’s not enough to have sustainability goals — you need to ensure that your brand reflects these values. Getting buy-in from the executive team and other senior staff members is key to getting employees engaged. Show leadership, take a top- down approach III. More ways to encourage sustainability while working in a hybrid context
  • 27. post pandemic empowerment programme A sustainability committee is a dedicated group of staff who work collectively to brainstorm and execute environmental initiatives. • 39. post pandemic empowerment programme There’s deep, quite frankly, justified mistrust. The vast majority of people that talk about sustainability are doing it because they have to, which might not affect the final outcome, but does raise the question of the validity of the purpose behind it. 3. There’s widespread misinformation Sustainability hit the big screens loudly and suddenly and everyone was notified of the existence of this word while being told they were almost too late to learn it.
