Moodle At UVU

Utah Valley University is transitioning their aviation science program's online courses from a 10-year old learning management system to Moodle. They will move their 47 courses with ~30 instructors over to Moodle one course at a time, starting with AVSC 1010 this month and completing the transition in 2-3 years. The university chose Moodle because it is built on an open-source LAMP stack, has a strong community for support, and its module architecture will allow for future integrations and features.

- #5: Of course the actually flying happens locally. Wherever the student is, they have to take flight courses there. We have students all over the world.
- #7: We have a 10 year old system that was begun back when PHP was just getting started. For any developers out there, we have files with the .phtml extension. Now that’s old.

- #32: Faculty members have a adverse reaction to Blackboard. There is something in the system that causes systematic failure. Equation is “how heavy a black hole would be with the luminosity of the sun”.

- #36: Because developers may continue to come and go, we needed a system that was well documented and was built using common server elements. For example, Sakai is a fairly well-built system but the knowledge required to install, administer, and maintain a tomcat server is not commonplace among web developers.
