A double-blind, randomized controlled trial involving 68 postpartum mothers of preterm infants demonstrated that the intake of malunggay (moringa oleifera) leaves significantly increased breast milk production from postpartum days 3 to 5 compared to a placebo group. On day 4, there was a statistically significant difference in milk volume (p = 0.007), with the treatment group producing an average of 190 ml compared to 123.8 ml in the control group, and on day 5, the difference further increased (p = 0.000). The study concludes that moringa oleifera leaves are effective in augmenting breast milk supply for mothers of preterm infants, suggesting its routine use to ensure adequate breastfeeding.
